Pixie-bob: origin

The Pixie-bob breed is one of the feline breeds from the American continent. Specifically, its origin is found in a mountainous area of Washington known as the Cascade Mountains and its appearance dates back to the late 1960s.

these kittens arose in a natural way, without human intervention, so it is not known for sure which specific crossing allowed the birth of the first specimen of the breed. After much scrutiny, experts have suggested that it is the result of crosses between the wild American lynx, Bobcats and domestic cats.

As a curious fact about the history of the Pixie-bob, we can say that the first cat of the breed was called Pixie, that's why the breed was named pPxie-bob, mixing the name of this precursor with the prefix of the Bobcat. Whichever the right cross is, the fact is that the breed was recognized by the CFA in 1998.

Pixie-bob: physical characteristics

Pixie-bob cats are from medium to large size, with an average weight of 5 kg, although most specimens weigh close to 4 kg, with males being a little larger than females. These cats have a very slow maturity because their full development does not occur until four years of age, and it is normal for the rest of the cat breeds to have full growth at the age of 1 year.

The Pixie-bob cat has a body with bone structure and strong musculature, being elongated and usually short tail, although there are specimens that do not have a tail or have a long and always thick tail. The Pixie-bob's head is long, with a prominent forehead and a strong jaw. The eyes are medium and oval, with a color that matches the coat. Their ears have broad, rounded tips, with tufts similar to those of lynxes.

Pixie-bob cat colors

The coat of a pixie-bob is short, dense and abundant, with woolly, waterproof fur. colors cover various shades of brown and reddish, with spots in agreement with the main color.

Pixie-bob: personality

One of the most important characteristics of the Pixie-bob is its special personality, which is what makes it so appreciated. These kittens are very friendly and affectionate, that's why many consider them the ideal cat for families with children, as they are very loving and patient. In this way, it is not necessary to fear conflicts between them and the little ones in the house.

These cats adapt perfectly to apartment life as they are calm and love to enjoy long naps and cleaning sessions in the armchairs or sofas around the house. Furthermore, they are attentive and very smart, so they learn very fast, being one of the easiest cat breeds to educate. You can even teach some tricks or acrobatics if you are constant in your training.

Pixie-bob: care

One of the aspects you should pay attention to when caring for a Pixie-bob cat is to perform daily exercises. Although they are not nervous cats, they are active, so it is important to ensure that they can exercise every day. You can play with him or prepare toys of various kinds to keep him entertained, such as quest game ideas or brain games. In this sense, preparing an adequate environmental enrichment, providing scratchers with different heights and varied toys is more than recommended to encourage this exercise practice and stimulate the mind at the same time.

With respect to Pixie-bob coat care, you must brush it once a week so it looks nice and tidy, preventing the build-up of hair that can cause hairballs to form in your cat's digestive system. Likewise, it is necessary to offer him a healthy and balanced diet, in addition to ensuring that fresh, clean water is always available. Also, you should keep your ears, mouth, ears clean and be alert to possible changes in them.

Pixie-bob: health

Due to the natural origin of the Pixie-bob breed, this cat is in good health, but of course that doesn't mean they are immune to everything. Diseases that are typical of the breed have not yet been detected, however, there are a number of genetic anomalies that can affect it, although due to its recent appearance and consolidation as a breed, it is necessary to wait a while to confirm its tendency to suffer with them.

Some of them are the dystocia or cystic endometrial hyperplasia, which affect the female reproductive system, making childbirth and reproduction difficult. Another condition that seems common in Pixie-bob cats is the cryptorchidism, which occurs when one of the testicles does not develop or develops inguinal hernias. Finally, it appears that the Pixie-bob cat may be more likely to suffer from heart disease such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which consists of myocardial thickening for no apparent reason.

To detect any of the conditions mentioned, the most important thing is to go to the veterinarian regularly for periodic exams that allow you to know your cat's health status, being able to detect any changes as soon as possible. If you offer him all the care he needs, give him all your love and, in general, a good quality of life, the Pixie-bob cat can live up to 20 years.
