History of the Smooth-haired Fox Terrier
The Fox Terrier is one of the older terriers and apparently already existed in the middle of the XIX century in England. Like many other terriers, this breed was used by English farmers to kill foxes and rats that were the plagues that plagued England at that time.
According to many authors, the hard-haired Fox Terrier, a sister breed of the smooth-haired one, was originated simultaneously, but from different crosses. However, over time the two varieties crossed and were considered as the same breed until the mid-1980s. Since then, these two varieties have been recognized as separate breeds, as we know them today.
Today the smooth-haired Fox Terrier is much less popular than its cousin, the hard-haired Fox Terrier, and its use as a hunting dog is nearly extinct. Today he is a somewhat unknown companion dog, but loved by those who are lucky enough to have known him.
