Cornish Rex: origin

Originally from Cornwall, it was in 1950 when the first specimen of this breed was born, which the caregivers named Kollibunker. This kitten was very special because it had a wavy coat and it is for this characteristic that the breed is called "rex", sharing this name with a breed of rabbits that also have curly fur. This breed of cat gained so much popularity that within a few years it reached America. The growth was so great that in 1967 a breed standard had already been created in England and only a few years later, around 1970, the breed was recognized in the United States.

Cornish Rex: physical characteristics

The Cornish Rex cat breed is of size. small or medium, with a slender, elongated body and a slightly arched back. Cornish Rex cats typically weigh between 2.5 and 4.5 pounds. The tail is thin and quite wide, covered with curly hair. These cats have an enlarged head, triangular silhouette, thin jaw and broad forehead. They have ovulated eyes, a penetrating look and deep colors that match the coat color. On the head, the large triangular ears with a high set and a wide base stand out.

The most striking feature of the Cornish Rex breed is the coat, as they have a by the wavy, dense and short. The fur is extremely soft, fine and does not have a double coat. All colors are accepted by the standards, as well as the standard amusements.

Cornish Rex: personality

Cornish Rex cats tend to be amazing companions since she has a docile, affectionate and very caring personality. They are perfect for families with children or other animals, as they get used well with dogs and other cats. This breed of cats is active and very playful, so they are not recommended for sedentary people or people with little time to devote to pets.

Due to their personality, they cannot tolerate loneliness, so it is not recommended that they spend a lot of time alone. They adapt perfectly to indoor living, no matter the size of the house or apartment.

Cornish Rex: care

Because it has a short coat, it is very easy to maintain the good condition of the Cornish Rex's coat, and we recommend brushing once a week and sporadic bathing to keep it clean and silky. Anyway, to offer the best care to your feline, it is important that you provide a healthy and balanced diet, covering all the pet's needs.

On the other hand, it is essential to dedicate time to the Cornish Rex cat for activities and games as, as mentioned above, they have an active, playful personality and do not tolerate loneliness. With that in mind, adequate environmental enrichment is more than recommended for the care of Cornish Rex cats but also for all other cat breeds, so it is important that you have scratchers at home, preferably with different heights, a comfortable bed, assorted games, shelves with mattresses so they can lie down and so on. Like any other breed of cat, it is important to pay attention to the care of your nails, ears, mouth and eyes.

Cornish Rex: health

The Cornish Rex cat breed is very healthy and robust, despite having a tendency to be overweight. Therefore, it is recommended not to overfeed your feline companion as overweight and obesity are harmful to him. It is crucial that you exercise for good physical and mental health. A particularity of this breed of cat is that they are sensitive to low temperatures, so it is necessary to be careful that your pussy is not exposed to the cold, as it can suffer from colds or pneumonia.
