O Agility is an entertainment sport that fosters coordination between owner and pet. It is a circuit with a series of obstacles that the puppy must overcome as indicated, in the end the judges will determine the winning puppy according to his skill and the dexterity he showed during the competition.

If you've decided to get started in Agility or are looking for information about it, it's important that you know the type of circuit you have to familiarize yourself with the various obstacles you'll encounter on it.

Next, in PeritoAnimal we will explain everything about the agility circuit.

the circuit

The Agility circuit must have a minimum surface area of 24 x 40 meters (the indoor track is 20 x 40 meters). On this surface we can find two parallel paths that must be separated by at least a distance of 10 meters.

We talk about circuits with a length between 100 and 200 meters, depending on the category and in them we find obstacles, and we can find between 15 and 22 (7 will be fences).

The competition takes place in what is called TSP or standard time of the course defined by the judges, in addition to that, the TMP is also considered, that is, the maximum time the pair has to perform the race, which can be adjusted.

Next, we'll explain what types of obstacles you can encounter and the faults that lower your score.

jump fences

We found two types of jump fences to practice Agility:

At simple fences that can be made by wood panels, galvanized iron, grid, with bar and the measurements depend on the category of the dog.

  • W: 55 cm. to 65 cm
  • M: 35 cm. at 45 cm
  • S: 25 cm. to 35 cm

The width of all is between 1.20 m and 1.5 m.

On the other hand, we find the grouped fences which consist of two simple fences located together. They follow an ascending order between 15 and 25 cm.

  • W: 55 and 65 cm
  • M: 35 and 45 cm
  • S: 25 and 35 cm

The two types of fences must have the same width.

Wall

O wall or viaduct Agility can have one or two tunnel-shaped entrances to form an inverted U. The wall tower must measure at least 1 meter in height, while the height of the wall itself will depend on the category of the dog:

  • W: 55 cm to 65 cm
  • M: 35 cm to 45 cm
  • S: 25 cm to 35 cm.

Table

THE table it must have a minimum surface area of 0.90 x 0.90 meters and a maximum of 1.20 x 1.20 meters. The height for the L category will be 60 centimeters and the M and S categories will have a height of 35 centimeters.

It is a non-slip obstacle that the dog must stay on for 5 seconds.

catwalk

THE catwalk it is a non-slip surface that the dog will have to go through in the Agility competition. Its minimum height is 1.20 m and the maximum is 1.30 meters.

The total course will be 3.60 meters as a minimum and 3.80 meters as a maximum.

the ramp or palisade

THE ramp or palisade it is formed by two plates that form an A.It has a minimum width of 90 centimeters and the highest part is 1.70 meters above the ground.

Slalom

O Slalom it consists of 12 bars that the dog must overcome during the Agility circuit. These are rigid elements with a diameter of 3 to 5 centimeters and a height of at least 1 meter and separated by 60 centimeters.

hard tunnel

The rigid tunnel is a somewhat flexible obstacle to allow the formation of one or several curves. Its diameter is 60 centimeters and it usually has a length between 3 and 6 meters. The dog should move around the interior.

In case of closed tunnel we are talking about an obstacle that must have a rigid entrance and an interior path made of canvas that in total is 90 centimeters long.

The entrance to the closed tunnel is fixed and the exit must be fixed with two pins that allow the dog to exit the obstacle.

Tire

O tire is an obstacle that the dog must cross, having a diameter of between 45 and 60 centimeters and a height of 80 centimeters for the L category and 55 centimeters for the S and M category.

Long jump

O long jump it consists of 2 or 5 elements depending on the category of the dog:

  • L: Between 1.20 m and 1.50 m with 4 or 5 elements.
  • M: Between 70 and 90 centimeters with 3 or 4 elements.
  • S: Between 40 and 50 centimeters together with 2 elements.

The width of the obstacle will measure 1.20 meters and it is an element with ascending order, the first being 15 centimeters and the tallest being 28.

Penalties

Below we will explain the types of penalties that exist in Agility:

general: The objective of the Agility circuit is the correct passage through the set of obstacles that the dog must complete in a concrete order, without faults and inside the TSP.

  • If we exceed the TSP it will be decreased by one point (1.00) per second.

Agility Circuit Score

After completing a course, all dogs and guides will receive a score depending on the number of penalties:

  • From 0 to 5.99: Excellent
  • From 6 to 15.99: Very good
  • From 16 to 25.99: Good
  • More than 26.00 points: Not classified

A dog that receives three Excellent ratings with at least two different judges will receive the FCI Agility Certificate (whenever participating in an official test).

How is each dog classified?

An average will be taken that will add the penalties for errors on the course and time, making an average.

In the case of a tie once the average is made, the dog with the fewest penalties in the circuit will win.

If there is still a tie, the winner will be whoever completed the circuit in the shortest time.
