Wolf or dog?
In fiction, this canid is called "giant wolf" a close relative of the wolf, big and strong looking. First appears when Lord Eddard Stark finds a dead giant wolf along with her cubs. Far from wanting to kill them, Jon Snow asks Ned to let them live and that you offer them to each of your five legitimate children. When Ned is convinced, a sixth white puppy appears and is offered to Jon.
In real life, these dogs belong to the breed. northern inuit (Northern Eskimo dog) and its real ancestry is unknown. Appeared between the 70s and 80s in Canada but the breed itself was developed in the UK. It is estimated that its closest relatives include the Siberian husky, the Alaskan Malamute, the German Shepherd and the Labrador Retriever.
The northen Inuit was not accepted by the FCI but by the British Kennel Club. In addition, there are several associations dedicated exclusively to the development of this breed. They are kind dogs, faithful and very attached to their owners, of giant size, these dogs stand out for their great resemblance to the wild wolf.

1. Nymeria and Arya Stark
In fiction Nymera is a tremendously faithful direwolf who bites then-Prince Joffrey Baratheon to defend Arya. Fearing for the death of her wolf, Arya decides to force Nymeria to leave. His whereabouts are currently unknown. However, there are several occasions when Nymeria and Arya have connected mentally.

2. Summer and Bran Stark
summer, in the original version, it is the name of Bran Wolf and one of the bravest of the Strak direwolves, fearlessly attacking a White Walker. Throughout the series, he slavishly accompanies Bran and they remain very close, even getting into each other thanks to Bran's abilities as a Warg. Summer sacrifices herself in season six when the specters try to finish off Bran.
In real life Bran tried by all means to adopt Summer, something his family didn't allow because they already had two dogs in their house.

3. Shaggydog and Rickon Stark
Throughout the series, wild Osha is the one who takes care of Rickon after the fall of the Starks. In season six and before the Battle of the Bastards, Shaggydog is beheaded by Smalljon Umber who hands his head to Ramsay Bolton along with its owner, to prove Rickon's authenticity.

4. Gray Win and Robb Stark
Gray Wind is the real name of this cute wolf who faces Jaime Lannister when he is held hostage by Robb Strak. He is the protagonist of the Battle of Cruzaboi because without him they would not have been able to scare the horses and kill a group of sentries, which ended Lannister's forces. Gray Wind dies beheaded like his companion Robb by the Frey family who sews Gray Wind's head onto Robb's body.

5. Lady and Sansa Stark
After Nymeria, the wolf of Arya, bites then-Prince Joffrey Baratheon, whom Arya forces to flee, thus preventing her death imposed by Cersei Lannister, the queen was not satisfied with this escape and in return asked for the orde of Lady the wolf of Sansa. In the end it is Ned who ends Lady's life before the butcher has had time to do it himself.
In real life things were very different, Sophie Tuner became another famous one who adopted a dog and couldn't help but fall in love with "Dana", the real name of this beautiful dog.

6. Ghost and Jon Snow
Ghost, ghost in Portuguese, is the wolf that Jon Snow adopts. It is an albino dog with red eyes, it is the smallest of the litter. Ghost accompanies Jon throughout the series helping him to survive both him and Sam, fellow Nightwatchman. Even after the traitors killed Jon Snow, the Ghost remained beside his master's body.

Trivia About Thrones War Wolves
- During the production of the series, several special effects were used to enhance the size and some aspects of these "giant wolves". Sometimes images of real wolves were mixed with real acting dogs.
- The direction asked all the young actors to play and play with the northen inuit, and even offered them up for adoption. As with Sansa who fell in love and adopted Lady.
- Giant wolves are inspired by the now extinct, kennels dirus, a Pleistocene species that shared its habitat with the mammoth and the saber-toothed tiger (Smilodon).
