As with commercial food, homemade recipes have advantages and disadvantages which must be evaluated by the owner before inserting your dog in this type of food:

  • We can prepare diets from organic and natural products.
  • We are able to select the foods that are more digestible for our dog.
  • We have the option of offering a rich and varied diet.
  • We improve the dog's immune system.
  • It is generally more appetizing and acceptable than commercial food.
  • We avoid the use of additives and preservatives.
  • The cost is very low in mini, small and medium breeds.

Disadvantages:

  • We need to invest time in preparing recipes.
  • Supplements are needed to ensure proper dog nutrition.

Puppy feeding according to age

Now that you know these five recipes that serve as examples to start making homemade puppy foods, you need to know how often should you feed your dog. Don't forget that it is essential to follow your veterinarian's advice, however, below, we provide you with a basic guide.

The puppy's feeding, month by month:

  • before the month of life: the offspring with less than one month of life will only be fed with breast milk provided by the mother. If you don't have a mother or have been rejected by her, we can use artificial infant milk (sold in pharmacies or veterinary clinics), but we can also develop an emergency formula for exceptional cases.
  • 1 month: at this stage, the mother, in the wild, would start to regurgitate the food (very digested) to offer it to the puppies in a very punctual way. It would be the first contact they'd have with solid food. At this point, they begin to get baby teeth and we can offer our puppy a soft or mashed food daily.
  • 1 to 2 months: the bitch will gradually start to stop feeding her puppies, so we have to keep pressing them between once and twice a day, as accepted, always on very soft food basis.
  • 2 - 6 months: At this stage, the puppy has already stopped feeding on breast milk and will start to ingest solid food on its own. It is ideal to offer it about three times a day. It is always recommended to crush bones or use knee bones, for example.
  • 6 - 12 months: from six months of age, we can start to feed our puppy with two doses a day, as we will do with adult dogs.

Remember that puppies should be fed the same products you would use for an adult dog (meat, offal and bones), but with the difference that they need to eat more regularly and/or adapted to their age.

Don't forget that your puppy's diet should be varied and complete and that you can use all kinds of meat, fish and vegetables that are good for dogs and supplement your diet with natural puppy supplements. In the event of any health problem, especially vomiting or diarrhea, we must go to the vet immediately.
