Tigers, like lions, are one of the great land predators, to the point that, except for the adult elephants and rhinos that are in good physical condition, they can hunt and feed on virtually any animal. These felines are solitary in their behavior, as they usually come together only to mate. In fact, males are very territorial with each other, even though they eventually allow a female to enter their territory.
I'm sure you've already noticed, through photos or videos, that tigers have big bodies, but you know how much does a tiger weigh? In this PeritoAnimal article, we will give you the answer to this and other questions about him.
Current Tiger Species
tigers belong to species tiger panther and, until recently, six subspecies were established, they are:
- Altaic Tigris Panthera
- panthera tigris corbetti
- tiger pantherjacksoni
- tiger panthersumatrae
- tiger panthertiger
- Panthera tigris amoyensis
However, recently, in 2017, researchers from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature carried out a regrouping, recognizing only two subspecies: tiger panthertiger and tiger pantherprobe, which we will specify below.
Bengal tiger (tiger panthertiger)
It is commonly known as Bengal tiger and in it the subspecies were grouped P.t. altaica, P.t. corbetti, P.t. jacksoni, P.t. amoyensis and other extinct ones. It is found mainly in India, but there are also populations in Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma (Myanmar) and Tibet. It is a subspecies that reaches large sizes, in fact, the biggest, and this corresponds with his ferocity and dexterity to hunt.
Males are solitary and territorial among themselves, they only join the females for reproduction, although they can share their space with them and with the offspring. The color of the Bengal tiger is typical of these felines, intense orange with black stripes. Even though they may have mutations that originate white or golden tigers.
Sumatran Tiger (tiger pantherprobe)
In this subspecies are grouped two extinct and that of Sumatra. This group is also commonly known as the Java Tigers. It has some characteristics different from the previous subspecies, such as smaller size and the presence of a greater amount of black stripes between the orange color, in addition to which they tend to be thinner.
They also feature a beard somewhat developed compared to the other group and are agile swimmers, which even allows them to hunt in the water.

how much does a tiger cub weigh
Tigers usually mate several times in the few days the female remains receptive, to eventually become pregnant and have a gestation period of just over 100 days. After that time, it will have between one and six cubs. O tiger weight puppy is 1 kg or a little less. However, it varies from one subspecies to another. Thus, the weight of the tiger of each subspecies in the period in which they are cubs would be:
- Bengal tiger cubs: between 800 and 1500 grams.
- Sumatran tiger cubs: about 1200 grams.
The cubs at birth are blind and totally dependent on the mother. Even when there are several individuals, not all of them always survive, due to not being able to feed themselves properly.
Until 8 or 10 weeks, tiger cubs will not leave the den in which they were born and are nursed until approximately 24 weeks. From this moment on, the mother will start bringing them dead prey so that they can start consuming their carnivorous diet. The young will remain close to the mother until they are two or three years old and, soon, the females will establish their territories near her, while males will seek theirs, which will often have to compete with another male to occupy it.
How much does an adult tiger weigh
The tiger, next to the lion, is the biggest cat in the world currently, being the largest carnivorous predators within the ecosystems they inhabit.
On average, the tiger weight go of 50 to 260 kg in the case of males, while females are usually smaller, with an interval between the 25 and 170 kg. As for the length, the first measure from head to tail between 190 and 300 cm and females between 180 and 270 cm.
However, as with newborns, adult tigers vary in weight and size by subspecies.
How much does an adult Bengal Tiger weigh
The Bengal Tiger (panthera tigris tigris) is the largest and, therefore, the most important of the current subspecies. Thus, according to sex, these are the data for length and weight ofBengal tiger adult:
- males: weigh between 100 and 230 kg and measure from 270 to more than 300 cm.
- females: weigh about 130 kg and measure between 240 and 260 cm.
Furthermore, the height of this subspecies can reach 110 cm.
How much does a Sumatran or Java tiger weigh
THE tiger pantherprobe it is a smaller subspecies than the Bengal tiger. In this case, its weight and length would be:
- males: weigh between 100 and 140 kg and measure between 230 and 250 cm in length.
- females: weigh between 70 and 115 kg and measure about 220 cm in length.
Animal taxonomy is usually not considered definitive and it is common that, with the advance of science, new evidence emerges that establish new criteria, which implies that changes are made in the names of species, as well as in their divisions. In the case of tigers, we can particularly note this fact, of six recognized subspecies, there has been a regrouping into two.
In any case, tigers continue to be one of the super predators that are endowed with several bodily strategies, including their big bodies stand out, which allow them to be almost infallible when hunting.
