History of the shepherd-de-beauce

the beauceron is a dog distinctly french and originated in the plains near Paris, known as la beauce . Previously, these dogs were used for multiple functions, since guide the herds and protect them from external threats until the protection of property and people .

In 1863 the two breeds of herding dogs in France, the short-haired (shepherd-de-beauce) on one side and the long-haired (briard) on the other, were differentiated. The Central Canine Society (La Société Centrale Canine) registered the first shepherd-de-beauce in 1893, and in 1922 the first club of the breed was founded.

These dogs were also used by the french army in the two world wars. However, despite its great qualities, the shepherd-de-beauce has not become a very popular dog. To reverse this situation, a racing recovery and promotion program was created in 1960. Since then, the beauceron has started to gain popularity and actively participate in sports and dog shows, although it is still a little known dog outside France.

Characteristics of the shepherd-de-beauce

the body is solid, powerful, rustic and muscular , but without giving the impression of being heavy. It is slightly longer than it is tall and has a straight, deep chest. The legs are strong and muscular and the hind legs have a double stimulus characteristic of the breed. The head of the shepherd-de-beauce is rounded/flattened or slightly rounded. The cranial vault and the upper plane of the muzzle are parallel. The nose is black and not split.

The eyes are slightly oval and are arranged horizontally. They can be brown or brown , but always dark. For harlequin colored dogs, eyes of different colors are accepted. The ears are semi-guided or dangling, and in the old days the running pattern required them to be amputated to give a more wolf-like appearance. Fortunately, this custom has been lost and the practice is now illegal in many European countries, so the breed standard has changed and accepts natural ears.

The tail is long and low. It reaches at least to the hock point (behind the knee) and forms a slight "J" hook at the end. The breed standard makes it very clear that the tail must not be amputated in any way.

The coat of the shepherd-de-beauce is resistant, short, thick, dense and smooth. On the body it is between three and four centimeters long, but shorter on the head. The inner layer is thin, dense and velvety. The fur of these dogs can be black and brown or harlequin .

The height to the withers of the males varies from 65 to 70 centimeters. Females range from 61 to 68 centimeters. The puppies of the beauceron breed can weigh between 30 and 50 kilos.

Shepherd-de-beauce or beauceron personality

The shepherd-de-beauce dogs are confident, brave and loyal . They are very intelligent animals capable of learning a wide variety of commands, words and actions. They are wonderful dogs that require good treatment and we emphasize that physical punishment, humiliation and bad habits are very harmful for training and the relationship with their tutor.

They are generally very loyal and affectionate with their tutors and close people, but reserved with strangers. However, he can get along well with other people, dogs, and pets if he's been socialized well, a topic we'll discuss in dog education. If so, we will be facing a social dog, happy and fearless.

First of all, they are excellent animals that generally get along very well with people, children and all kinds of animals. However, if we have very young children at home, we will have to explain how to treat the dog correctly. Fur, tail or ear tugs are not well accepted by this proud breed.

Care of the beauce-pastor

The coat of these puppies is very easy to take care of. Usually, the weekly brushing is enough to get rid of dead hair and bathing should only be given when the dog is dirty. However, this depends largely on the activity that dogs perform outdoors, as, by their active nature, they tend to get dirty easily. We must leave at least 30 days of space between one bathroom and another, otherwise we would be eliminating the dog's natural layer of protection. Let's pay attention to the cleaning teeth, nails and ears, about twice a month, a habit that will help prevent potential health problems.

Shepherd-de-beauce puppies are dogs that require a lot of exercise and company. They are not pets for sedentary people and do not easily adapt to apartment life. They can live well in big cities, but they need long walks and games.

education of the shepherd-de-beauce

Like most herding breeds, the beauceron answer very well different methods of training dogs and has shown this in different disciplines. However, traditional canine training does not work well with this prime dog breed. The shepherd-de-beauce suffers from serious stress problems in the face of clashes, scolding and mistreatment. For that same reason, we will always work using positive reinforcement, a tool that provides confidence, rewards and motivates a dog's natural initiative.

If not, the beauceron can develop canine behavior problems. If they don't get enough exercise or spend too much time alone, they can become destructive or aggressive dogs. It should be taken into account that these dogs evolved to develop intense physical work in the company of shepherds, so they need exercise and company.

The education of the shepherd-de-beauce must start when he is still a puppy, correctly preparing the socialization with the environment (city, cars, nature), the people and other animals. The richer and more varied the dog's socialization, the happier and more sociable it will be in its adult stage. A good application also helps to avoid behavioral problems related to fear and reactivity.

As a very intelligent dog, it will be convenient to start working on basic obedience commands when he is still a puppy. Thus, when you reach adulthood, you will have well established the basic forms of communication for your safety and well-being. Once he understands and correctly lists the basic signals, we can begin to actively work with him all kinds of tricks, exercises and intelligence games. Keeping the dog motivated is an excellent way to improve his well-being and offer him a full life by our side.

Health of the shepherd-de-beauce

the beauceron or shepherd-de-beauce are generally healthy dogs, but the breed has a certain predisposition to certain diseases. In addition to strictly following your vaccination schedule and your deworming (internal and external), we will pay attention to the following diseases:

  • hip dysplasia it is a degenerative bone problem that affects the dog's mobility causing pain and discomfort. It is a malformation of the joint and can appear if we exceed the practice of exercise abnormally and excessively. If your beauce shepherd suffers from this disease and is stressed, don't hesitate to visit our post on exercise for dogs with hip dysplasia.
  • The gastric torsion it happens when we feed or offer water just before the dog gets too much exercise. It is a very serious complication that puts the dog's life at serious risk.
  • It is important to check the double spur on the hind legs frequently, as it can be easily injured. In the case of frequent injuries, it may be necessary to amputate this spur to avoid infection and other damage (although this is against the breed standard and is not acceptable for show dogs). To avoid injuries, we will have to cut the nail when necessary, removing the hair that surrounds the region.
