Cats considered the first of the Nebelung breed were born in 1986 in the United States. These kittens were the offspring of an American Longhair cat and a Russian Blue cat. These cats belonged to a US breeder named Cora Cobb, considered the "author" of the breed. The breed's name comes from the German word "nebel" which it means mist and all this thanks to the gray color of the fur.
Although many people love these cats, there were some problems with the recognition of the breed by official bodies. Thanks to a great struggle, a group of breeders managed to get the breed recognized in the United States by the American Cat Franciers Association (ACFA), the World Cat Federation (WCF) and the Livre des Origines Félines (LOOF).

The Nebelung cat breed is considered to be of medium size, weighing between 4 and 6 kilos in the case of males and between 3 and 4 kilos in the case of females. The Nebelung's life expectancy is between 15 and 18 years.
