There are many options on the cat antiparasitic market. Pipettes are widely used and recommended by veterinarians but they can also be very expensive.

Many people wonder about more economical and natural alternatives to deworm cats. It is mainly those people who help to take care of stray cats and do not have the economic means to buy pipettes, who are looking for this type of alternative.

For this reason, PeritoAnimal prepared this article for you to know how to make a homemade dewormer for cats, more precisely a homemade pipette. We will explain to you how to prepare, how to apply and how long it is effective.

Are dewormers good for cats?

You antiparasitic are a basic and essential product for the health of cats, especially for those who have access to the outside, since they are more exposed to a possible infestation of fleas or ticks, for example. Although commercial options are the most recommended option by veterinarians, there are alternatives. It is important to remember that studies are carried out regularly to confirm the effectiveness of antiparasitic drugs and different brands are adapting their products to the new resistance of the parasites.

When applying the pipette, especially if the cat already has fleas, you must follow a series of rules, such as bathing the cat. Have you ever wondered why? It is not just to clean the feline, bathing also helps to eliminate parasites. However, it is not an easy task, especially if the cat is not used to it.

Despite the benefits of commercial pipettes and the numerous advantages over homemade pipettes, they have some disadvantages. At industrial pipettes are composed of chemicals that can be harmful to the health of the animal and those around it (for example, some animals suffer intoxications after the pipette is administered because they lick and ingest the product). The same happens with children who play with cats after placing the pipette, touch the product with their hands, lick their own fingers, ingesting the toxic components.

What do we need to make the homemade pipette?

You should try to get all the necessary ingredients from herbalists, agroecological crops or growers who do not use pesticides nor chemicals in the crops.

Ingredients

  • Neem (neem) or Amargosa oil
  • Citronella or citronella oil
  • Eucalyptus Oil
  • Mint Oil or Tea Tree Oil
  • Hypertonic (or natural) seawater or saline solution

All the products mentioned, with the exception of sea water, can be purchased in 50 ml bottles (the most suitable) or in 10 or 20 ml bottles. Prices vary depending on the size of the bottle, but are generally very economical.

To prepare seawater follow these instructions:

  1. go to the sea to collect water
  2. Leave to decant for 24 hours
  3. Pass the water through a coffee filter

Another possible option is to buy seawater and convert it to isotonic in a 3:1 ratio.

You will need to buy one. 2 ml syringe (without needle) to be able to apply the solution and a 10 ml caramel color bottle to make the mixture and keep the preparation for some time. This way, you won't have to keep preparing the solution whenever you want to deworm the cat.

Pipette preparation

As mentioned earlier, we can prepare the solution in the bottle and keep for 2 months. You must repeat the application once a month. We will do the calculations for 10 ml:

  1. Isotonic seawater or serum (65%) = 6.5ml
  2. Mint oil or tea tree oil (10%) = 1 ml
  3. Eucalyptus oil (10%) = 1 ml
  4. Citronella or citronella oil (10%) = 1ml
  5. Neem oil (Nim) or bitter oil (5%) = 0.5 ml

You will have prepared 10 ml of product, of which you must apply 1.5 ml per month in each cat. Do not forget to handle the bottle very carefully and always use a clean syringe to avoid contaminating the product.

How, when and where to apply?

To get a good result, you should apply the pipette correctly: the ideal would be to start by bathing the feline and after a day or two, apply the pipette.

Regarding the dose, it is important to mention that for cats weighing less than 10 kg you should use 1.5 ml of product per month. In case the cat weighs more than 10 kg, you should use around 2 ml. This dose is not a general rule, so it is recommended that you consult your Natural Medicine Veterinarian.

The best areas to apply are the neck area, between the two scapulae (half the amount) and the area of the hip, a few centimeters from the beginning of the tail (the other half). Some people prefer to place the entire product in the neck area.

By following this simple process, even with few resources, you will be able to keep the parasites away from the kittens in a natural and safe way.
