O Boerboel is a breed of mastiff dog that comes from South Africa. It has received several names, including African Boerboel or South African Mastiff. Its ancestors are the Bullmastiff, the Great Dane and the Bullenbeisses, the latter being an extinct dog.
The first examples of Boerboel date back to the year 1600, when during the Boer War, the Dutch colony that until then lived in South Africa passed into the hands of the British Empire, which used this wonderful breed to protect its farms.

Physical appearance
The boerboel has a imposing physique and impressive because it is a very big dog. Both males and females can measure up to 70 centimeters to the cross, weighing up to 95 kilograms in really large specimens.
The Boerboel is not a dog for everyone, as its large size requires an experienced tutor who knows how to control and educate this large dog.
It has short, smooth fur and can be of many colors including sand, red, brindle or yellowish hue. These shades match your eyes that usually range between yellow, brown and chocolate.
Character
Emotionally, it's a balanced and intelligent dog who enjoys the relationship with their family nucleus. He knows how to behave and is a very obedient dog who, for centuries, served as a working dog.
It is important to know that you should never make your Boerboel believe that the tutor is suffering some kind of aggression from another human being. It is a dog suspicious of strangers and has a very protective character, being able to attack easily if someone shows intentions to hurt you.
The Boerboel is not afraid, it is a confident and self-assured dog, which we know only by watching it pass. However, he is a very affectionate puppy with his tutors who will love to show his playful and participative side.
Behavior
your relationship çwith the children The family is very well known as affable, affectionate and caring, although it is a large dog. If the Boerboel has been properly socialized with its family and environment, we can say that it will be an excellent dog with whom your children can play freely. Even so, we remember that it is very important that the little ones are educated so that they play calmly and do not bother or hurt the dog.
As for the attitude of the boerboel with other dogs, will not always be affable and friendly, although this is also an aspect that depends directly on the socialization he received as a puppy. Education is very important in such a big dog. If the education was not the best, you can start preparing to re-educate a dog with an attitude of superiority and dominance in this type of relationship.
education
the boerboel is a excellent guard dog who will not hesitate to protect his family, herd or pack. Aware of its size, the animal understands the advantage this represents.
We are talking about a dog that needs an experienced companion in training and socialization based on the animal's positive reinforcement and well-being. It is also important to point out that it needs a minimum of strength, as it is a dog that can take the tutor wherever he wants (no doubt).
The Boerboel breed is smart and learns what you ask for quickly, as well as basic and advanced education.
care
Among the care, we highlight the exercise as the most important. The Boerboel is a dog that needs to move, exercise its muscles and release any accumulated stress. You need large amounts of daily food (between 600 and 800 grams), which makes physical activity even more necessary. For this reason, if your intention is to adopt a Boerboel, you must be able to take large, quality tours.
Brushing your fur is enough to prevent the appearance of fleas and ticks and, as it has a short coat, you only need to brush it twice a week.
Health
Due to the great weight it supports, prolonged exercise should be avoided, that is, the tutor must respect the animal's fatigue and not force it to run if it doesn't want to. It should also be watched so that you are not lying down or inactive all day, which will prevent the onset of hip dysplasia.
Puppies' diet should include amounts of calcium to improve the quality of their bones and their growth because, being a large dog, the animal supports a lot of weight on its bones. Ask your veterinarian for more guidance.
