- Myths about sterilization and castration
Many people do not know what benefits and advantages a castration can have in pets.
If you think about bitches and animal shelters, they always deliver animals for adoption already sterilized or neutered, since this prevents serious diseases and transmission of them, in addition to improving the behavior of the animal and thus preventing more animals from ending up abandoned.
If you still have doubts about whether to neuter or not, check out the following PeritoAnimal article where we show you the benefits of canine castration, you will see that this really is what you should do as a person in charge of your pet's health.
Spay or sterilize?
Next, we'll explain the characteristics of each process to assess which one is more favorable for your pet, both for its health and for the problems it may develop:
- THE castration it is the surgical removal of the sexual organs, which makes the hormonal processes disappear and the character of the castrated individual does not change, except in the case of a very territorial dog becoming aggressive due to sexual dominance, in this case the castration will make this behavior decrease a lot or even disappear. The females will no longer have heat. In males this operation is called castration (removal of the testicles), but in the case of females there are two ways to carry it out, if you remove only the ovaries we are facing an oophorectomy, and if you remove the ovaries and the uterus the operation is called an ovariohysterectomy.
- On the other hand, we have the sterilization, this operation is different from castration since in this case the sexual organs are not removed, although the reproduction of the animal is prevented. In the case of males it is a vasectomy and in the case of females a tubal ligation. Performing this operation the individual will continue with their sexual behavior, in the case of males who are very sexually dominant, this dominance will not disappear and females will continue to have estrus, this because the hormonal processes are not modified.
Both one operation and the other are light surgeries that favor the health of our pet, its behavior and prevent reproduction and therefore help to reduce the number of abandoned and homeless animals.
However, you should bear in mind that this is an operation under general anesthesia, so it is important that it be carried out under the control and responsibility of a specialist veterinarian, in an operating room and with the proper materials.
In addition to taking place in veterinary clinics and hospitals, there are protective entities that have the infrastructure and people really necessary for this, offering more affordable prices and even in campaigns it can be free.
Advantages and Benefits of Neutering Your Dog
We've already mentioned some advantages, but below we'll explain many more, both for your pet, for you and for the rest of the planet:
Benefits of spaying your dog or bitch:
- It has been proven that spayed or neutered animals have a longer life expectancy.
- It will reduce and even eliminate aggressive behavior that can cause them problems by fighting with other males or females.
- Many diseases are avoided, as it is also proven that unneutered puppies run a high risk of contracting very serious diseases that can end in their death.
- Some of the diseases that we managed to avoid with this procedure are those that can arise from the process of pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding, which can leave sequelae and even cause the death of our bitch and/or her puppies.
- For females there is a great benefit to being sterilized early, as this greatly reduces the likelihood of breast, cervical and ovarian cancer, including uterine infections. If this procedure is not done at a young age, these risks are also reduced, but the younger the bitch, the more percentage we can reduce these risks.
- In males, castration reduces testicular and prostate cancer. The same thing that we mentioned with females happens, the younger the risk, the lower the risk.
- In females, psychological pregnancy is avoided, because when they suffer from it they feel both physically and psychologically ill and it is a long process to resolve.
- The behavior that occurs when females are in heat and have a strong instinct to reproduce is avoided, something that leads them to run away from home to find a male and unfortunately leads them to get lost or have accidents.
- Likewise, we avoid this sexual behavior in males, because when they detect a female in heat their instinct is to run away from home to look for her, with the possibility of getting lost and having accidents. Furthermore, a single male can impregnate several females in a single day.
Benefits of neutering your pet for you:
- Your pet will mark the territory much less, which will make you urinate less at home and around every corner.
- In case you have a female dog, neutering her will improve the hygiene in your home, as she will no longer stain the floor of the entire house with blood every time she has heat, which is twice a year for several days.
- It will improve behavior problems such as aggression.
- Your dog or bitch will be less sick, as it eliminates the risk of contracting many diseases, especially cancer. You will notice this especially economically because you will need to go to the vet with your pet less, and you will also have a healthier, happier companion who will live more years with you.
- It will avoid unwanted litters of puppies, as a female dog can have several puppies and twice a year.
- You will avoid feeling bad and having problems with litters of puppies that you cannot care for and keep at home.
- You should think that this is an operation with a very low risk and that, if you are going to have yours under general anesthesia, you can take the opportunity to perform another operation or treatment, if necessary. For example, a mouthwash in case you have accumulated tartar as it can lead to very serious problems. Taking advantage of anesthesia will be healthier for your friend and more economical for you.
For society, living beings and our planet:
- By sterilizing or neutering our dog or bitch, we are preventing unwanted litters from being born and, therefore, that more dogs end up abandoned.
- It gives an abandoned animal the opportunity to get a home.
- Avoid the unnecessary sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of puppies for lack of a home and owners to take care of them. We must be aware that only one female dog and her first litter without spaying or neutering can breed, for example in a period of 6 years, and bring 67000 puppies into the world.
- Thanks to this, the saturation of shelters and associations dedicated to looking after and looking for homes for abandoned dogs is reduced. Most of them are at their maximum capacity.
- Neutering is the only real way to reduce the number of stray animals.
- By reducing the animals on the streets, we also reduce the risk of having abandoned animals both for them and for the inhabitants of a village, as sometimes a stray animal to defend its space or because it is scared can defend and/or attack.
- The management of associations, animal shelters and other similar entities generates a large economic expense, sometimes private, but often it is public money. Thus, by neutering our pets, we are avoiding the saturation of these entities, helping to reduce the economic cost.
Myths about sterilization and castration
