Cats are beautiful and charming creatures by nature. Even when they are of a certain age, cats continue to be friendly and youthful looking, showing everyone that the feline species is always wonderful.

Even so, in this article we decided to highlight five breeds of exotic cats, so that you can be surprised by the different specimens that the PeritoAnimal team selected.

Keep reading to discover the 5 exotic cat breeds: the sphynx cat, scottish fold, ukrainian levkoy, savannah and the carey cat.

sphynx cat

The sphynx cat, also known as the Egyptian cat, appeared in the late 70s. It is a cat that became very famous due to its apparent lack of fur.

These cats are usually very sociable and sweet to their guardians. They are very affectionate but also a little dependent. What you probably don't know is that these cats have recessive hair genes. Their bodies are covered in a thin layer of fur, although at first glance they appear to have no fur. For this reason, contrary to what many people think, these animals are not suitable for people with allergies.

The heads of these kittens are small in proportion to their bodies. The very large ears stand out. Another characteristic characteristic of these cats are the deep eyes and an almost mesmerizing look, considered mystical by many people.

It's a cat that need a comfortable bed and pleasant temperatures indoors, especially during the winter, because she has very sensitive skin.

Scottish Fold

The Scottish Fold breed is, as its name implies, originally from Scotland, although her ancestors come from Susie, a Swedish female cat who bred with a British Shorthair, which may explain some of the similarities of these breeds such as the small folded ears and the round and robust appearance.

The morphology and appearance of these cats often resembles a stuffed animal. The sweet physiognomy of these cats is accompanied by a personality friendly and quiet, which make them ideal companions for children. Furthermore, it is a very tolerant animal towards other animals, regardless of the species.

Recently, the British Veterinary Association asked not to breed any more cats of this breed due to their serious health problems. This species has a genetic mutation that affects the cartilage and because of that, their ears bend and they look like an owl. This genetic mutation turns out to be an incurable disease, similar to arthritis and very painful for the animal. Some defenders of this breed claimed that if they crossed it with the british shorthair or with the american shorthair, they would not have these problems. However, the British Veterinary Association stated that this was not true because all the folded ear looking cats have the genetic mutation.

Ukrainian Levkoy

The breed of this cat originated in Ukraine very recently. The first specimen of this breed was born in January 2014, as a result of crossing a sphynx with a scotish fold, the race we talked about earlier.

From its physical characteristics we must highlight the ears folded inwards, the angular shape of the face and sexual dimorphism. Males reach a considerably larger size than females.

It is an intelligent, sociable and familiar cat. It is not common to be found around the world because the breeders of the breed are still developing it.

Savannah

We could define this breed as the exotic cat by excellence. It is a crossbreeding cat of the African serval (wild cats originating in Africa that live in the savannas).

We can see its typical large ears, long legs and fur similar to that of a leopard.

Some of these cats are very smart and curious, learn different tricks and enjoy the company of tutors. However, these cats, being hybrids (the result of a cross with a wild animal), maintain many of the characteristics and behavioral needs of their ancestors. The abandonment rate of these animals is high, especially when they reach sexual maturity, because they can become aggressive. These cats have already been banned in countries like Australia due to their negative effect on native fauna.

carey

O carey cat it is not a defined race. On the contrary, this cat stands out and differentiates by the thousand brown colors that the ancestors attributed to it. We decided to include this carey cat as a final note to highlight that mixed or stray cats are less likely to develop disease and are as cute or cuter than any purebred cat.

We end with the story of the cat Carey:

Legend has it that several centuries ago, the Sun begged the Moon to cover it for a while because it wanted an alibi to leave the sky and be free.

The lazy moon agreed, and on June 1st, when the sun shone more brightly, it approached him and gradually covered and fulfilled his wish. The sun, which watched the earth for millions of years, had no doubts and to feel totally free and go unnoticed, it became a more discreet, fast and charming being: a black cat.

After a while, the moon got tired and, without warning the sun, slowly drifted away. When the sun became aware, it ran to the sky and so fast that it had to leave the earth, it left a part of it: hundreds of sunbeams that got stuck in the black cat transforming it into a mantle of yellow and orange tones.

It is said that, in addition to their solar origin, these cats have magical properties and bring luck and positive energy to those who adopt them.
