Bombay cat: origin
The Bombay cat originates from the mid-1950s, in Louisville, Kentuky (USA) thanks to the breeder Nikki Horner. His main intention was to create a cat that looked like a panther, with short, shiny black fur. For this, he was inspired by his favorite panther, the black leopard Bagheera from the Disney children's movie Mogli.
From 1953, Horner began selectively breeding Bombay cats from the cross between the American short and black cat together with the Sacred Burmese cat, this is a hybrid breed but does not have any wild offspring. It took some time for the breed to be recognized, but finally in 1976 the Bombay cat was created, a black cat, with shiny fur and green eyes.
Bombay cat: physical characteristics
The Bombay cat stands out for having a muscular and compact body, but at the same time more agile than the Sacred Burma cat, breed of cat from which it descends. It is of medium size and has a medium sized tail. The face of this cat is round, the snout is very short and the paw pads are completely black, a characteristic that makes this breed unmistakable.
The coat color of this breed of cat is black (from root to tip), short, smooth and extremely shiny, it can look like a satin fabric. Another very outstanding feature is the color of the eyes, which can be green and sometimes golden, but always very bright.
Bombay cat: personality
The Bombay cat is usually very sociable and affectionate, enjoys the company of human relatives a lot, and does not like solitude. In some cases, if the Bombay cat spends a lot of time alone at home, he may experience separation anxiety, a psychological condition that can affect his well-being. This breed of cat loves to meow to communicate their mood or to ask for something, but always with a pleasant, sweet tone of voice.
Despite being a very lazy cat, because it spends many hours sleeping and resting, the Bombay cat is a lover of play and fun, it is a breed of cat recommended especially for families with children and other cats, as, as we have already mentioned, it is a extremely sociable cat. They adapt well to any lifestyle as long as the family provides regular attention and petting for the Bombay cat.
This breed of cat is especially intelligent so they can learn different tricks and exercises if you use positive reinforcement as the basis of education, such as play and seek games, jumps and many physical activities including going for a walk on a leash.
Bombay cat: care
The Bombay cat does not need much care as it has a short coat and has no tendency to create knots and accumulation of dirt. Two brushings a week are enough to help remove dead hair and keep the coat shiny, one of its hallmarks.
Remember that cats are animals that clean themselves a lot, so it is not necessary to bathe frequently, as with bathing the cat loses the natural protective layer of the skin. In some cases, if your cat is extremely dirty or has something stuck in the coat, you can give it a bath, but it is recommended to use dry shampoos or moistened washcloths. To make the hair even shinier, you can use dry conditioner.
It is also important to maintain a quality diet if not, there may be some changes in the pet's coat. For this, look for alternatives that are complete for a balanced diet or even, you can make food for your feline. You can also offer your cat small portions of moistened food daily, something that will help her to be more hydrated and will certainly make her very happy.
Don't forget that you should pay regular attention to the ears so that they are always clean, to the nails (remember that it is not recommended to cut the pussy's nails without professional help) and cleaning the teeth.
Bombay cat: health
The Bombay cat tends to have excellent health as it is one of the breed of cats less prone to disease and therefore has a longer life expectancy, reaching up to 20 years. However, some cats of this breed can suffer from skull malformation, an inherited health problem of the Sacred breed of Burma.
To prevent any health problem, it is very important to follow the cat vaccination schedule and the cat deworming plan, especially if you are a stray cat. Finally, it is highly recommended to visit a veterinarian every 6 months, this way you can ensure the pet's well being and health.
