Whippet History
The Whippet comes from crosses between the Greyhound and terrier-type dog breeds. The crosses performed gave rise to one of the fastest dogs that currently exist, capable of reaching 60 kilometers per hour in a few seconds. In fact, the Whippet is the dog that reaches the greater acceleration. These dogs were used as racing and hunting dogs for rabbits and hares. Currently, these tasks are not common and Whippets are increasingly common as pets, who enjoy a quiet life without having to work.
Physical characteristics of the Whippet
The breed standard accepted by the FCI indicates that the Whippet's appearance combines power and strength with elegance and beautiful lines, but it is difficult to appreciate the power and strength of this canine breed at first glance. On the contrary, an overview of the Whippet tends to make you think it is a delicate and fragile dog. However, a deeper knowledge of the breed reveals strong and resistant puppies, with a very good predisposition for physical activity.
The Whippet's head is long and thin, flat at the top. It gets narrower down to the muzzle, which is also long and thin. The eyes are oval, bright and with a very lively expression. The small, rose-shaped ears are fine in texture. The long, muscular neck is arched. The back is broad, firm and a little long, while the loin is strong and slightly curved. The deep chest has a low, well-defined forepart and continues with a well-retracted abdomen.
The tail of the Whippet is long and ends in a sharp point. Although the dog lifts it when it is active, it never takes it over its back. The fur is fine, short and compact, and can be any color.
The height at the withers that the males can reach oscillates between the 47 and 51 centimeters. the height at the withers of the females oscillates between 44 and 47 centimeters. Weight is not indicated in the FCI breed standard, but Whippets usually weigh between 9 and 20 kilos.
Whippet Character
Whippet is a dog of character quiet, kind, sweet and sensitive. It can be reserved with strangers, so it is recommended to socialize it from a puppy to avoid shyness problems when the dog is an adult. However, being reserved with strangers can be helpful if you want a watchdog to let you know.
These dogs do not withstand punishments well, neither physical nor psychological. Positive training works very well, and it's the dog training style to choose for this breed. Clicker training is perhaps the most advisable variant of positive training for training a Whippet.
these dogs usually get along with children, as long as the latter do not mistreat the dog. This breed of dog is not the best choice as a pet for young children. But they are excellent pets for older children who are able to control themselves and treat their dog well.
It is not easy to have a Whippet with another smaller pet, as these puppies have a strong hunting instinct and tend to chase and capture all the small animals that move fast. There are several cases where Whippets have killed other pets, such as cats and rabbits. However, they usually get along well with other dogs.
Whippet care
Due to their thin fur and short fur, these puppies are very sensitive to cold and should be protected with dog clothes when the weather is cold. Otherwise, you can see how your elegant puppy trembles. On the other hand, the Whippet's short fur is easy to maintain. Regular brushing and an occasional shower is usually sufficient. Also, the Whippet regularly loses hair.
They can adapt to living in an apartment, but they need to get intense exercise on a regular basis. Don't forget that they are greyhounds and, as such, need to run to release your energy. So it's better to have a fenced garden where the Whippet can run freely. If you don't have a garden, it is advisable to give the Whippet, at least once a day, the opportunity to run freely in an enclosed space. With about three rides a day and some free time, Whippet will be really happy.
Whippet Education
The Whippet is a shy dog but will have no problem with other dogs, if we provide you with a good socialization from your puppy stage. For this, you should introduce him to other dogs, cats and pets on a regular basis, in addition to people and objects of all kinds. This point is very important if you want the Whippet to socialize with other animals besides a dog.
Like any other dog, the Whippet must learn the basic orders that provide you with security wherever you are. In addition, this will allow you to develop good mental health and a good relationship with you.
Whippet Health
These greyhounds usually live between 12 and 15 years, but may be subject to some relatively frequent diseases in the breed. Whippets can suffer from cataracts, heart problems, progressive retinal atrophy, thyroid problems and hypersensitivity to chemicals and medications. In addition, they have very thin skin that can be easily hurt.
Following the puppy's vaccination schedule and consulting your veterinarian every 6 months can prevent many health problems or treat them quickly when they appear.
