what is a mutt

The word mutt appeared in a pejorative way to describe stray dogs in the country, but the term soon gained other proportions. Over the years we have come to refer to all the mixed breed dogs or "pure", that is, those who do not follow the race norms of institutions such as the Confederação Brasileira de Cinofilia (CBKC), the Federation Cinológica Iternacional (FCI) or the American Kennel Club, one of the largest and oldest registration clubs pedigree of purebred puppies from the United States. However, the correct nomenclature that has been more widespread is that of a mixed breed dog (SRD).

When it is said that a dog has no pedigree, it means that it is not purebred and does not have a specific document. Pedigree is nothing but the genealogical record of a purebred dog. Therefore, to be considered a pedigree dog, it must necessarily be the result of the crossing of two dogs that already have a pedigree attested by a kennel affiliated to the Brazilian Confederation of Cinofilia.

the tutor of a pedigree dog receives a document which includes information such as your name, race, the name of the breeder, the kennel, your parents, your date of birth and information about your family tree up to the third generation. It's like the birth certificate, but much more complete, of our four-legged friend.

Mutts are the most popular dogs in Brazil

We know that mutts are the majority in Brazil many, many years ago due to random crosses carried out for tens of generations between these animals. And that was exactly what the PetCenso 2020, carried out by the DogHero company, showed. According to the survey, mixed breed dogs are the most popular in the country: they represent 32% of the total number of dogs in Brazil. To give you an idea, next are the Shih Tzu (12%), the Yorkshire Terrier (6%), Poodle (5%) and French Bulldog (3%).

That's why you bump into a caramel mutt it is so common in the homes and streets of any Brazilian city, whether in Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Brasília, Fortaleza or Manaus. Below, we will explain its origins further.

Origin of the caramel mutt

Do you know the story about the caramel mutt? It is common to find many stray dogs in the country and we, from PeritoAnimal, even recommend the dog adoption practice, and not buying it, precisely because of the huge and sad number of abandoned animals that exist.

In recent years, thanks to the internet and its memes on social networks, the pride of the mutts has gained strength, represented by the caramel mutt, a very common animal and, therefore, easily seen in practically all of Brazil.

The domestication of dogs has a long history and there has always been a lot of controversy about the origin of this animal. What can it be said that dogs and wolves have many genetic similarities, and they both have a common ancestor.

Characteristics of the caramel pooch

With domestication, different breeds emerged, created from the crossing of different species, which also began to influence the size and colors of each animal. Different breeders around the world started to select races with specific characteristics, with a flatter muzzle, longer hair, shorter or longer tail, among others.

However, when there is no human selection, that is, when we do not influence the breeding of dogs, and they relate freely, what predominates in their offspring are the strongest genetic characteristics, such as a more rounded head, medium size, at least. short and the colors black or caramel. And because of these random crosses carried out several generations ago, it is impossible to determine the origin of the caramel pooch.

All over the world there is a wide variety of the most common mutts in each country, where the climate, the different local groups of dogs and other factors influenced their emergence. But in Brazil, the caramel mutts are descendants of european puppies that were brought here during the time of colonization by Portugal.

The natural mixture of puppies of different breeds or mixed breeds can even be something positive for the development of dogs. For the fact of maintaining the existence of certain races pure also causes such races to remain with genetic problems for countless generations, unlike what happens with "natural crosses". When there is no human influence, the tendency is for the strongest and healthiest genes to predominate, which makes mutts live longer and develop fewer diseases than different races.

Is the caramel mutt a breed?

This is a very common question, especially after the caramel mutt gained a lot of notoriety on the internet. However, no, the caramel mutt is not a pure breed and, yes, an undefined race (SRD). The nomenclature is given simply by the color of the animal's coat and encompasses a number of different characteristics of mutts.

Why has the caramel mutt become a national symbol?

The caramel mutt is a faithful companion Brazilians for many, many years. Present in all regions of the country, it is in the homes of thousands of people and we can also find examples of these mutts in large and small cities.

But he was especially famous thanks to the internet. After countless memes with dogs of this color, one of the most viral was his image on the R$ 10 bill. There was even a petition for him to replace the birds on the bills, conquering the internet, in 2019.

The caramel mutt of the R$ 200 bill

The following year, when the government announced that it would issue the R$ 200 bill, there was once again a great virtual mobilization so that, instead of the maned wolf, the caramel mutt could be placed. Even a federal deputy decided to organize a new petition requesting this. At the time, he argued that he did not discard the relevance of the maned wolf in Brazilian history and fauna, "but that the mutt is more present in everyday life of Brazilians".

Of the various setups they made with different mutts in the R$ 200 bill, the one that was most popular was one with the pipi bitch, from Porto Alegre. And the fact took her tutor, the gaucho Vanessa Brunetta, by surprise.

In an interview with the GZH website when the meme went viral, Vanessa said that in 2015 the Pipi caramel mutt got off her leash during a walk in Parque da Redenção and ran away. Throughout the following year, she made a campaign to locate the pet and used a photo on posters and on Facebook. The dog was never found, but someone on the internet found the photo and created the meme.

The use of the image bothered Vanessa, as she still misses Pipi to this day. But the unusual fame of the caramel mutt, on the other hand, was very well received by NGOs and animal protection associations, as it ended up drawing attention to the theme of adoption and abandonment of animals in the country. According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), there are around 30 million abandoned animals.
