Physical appearance
It is a cat with a strong and big look, presenting a robust body with well-proportioned legs. To get an idea of the size of Ragdoll, females usually weigh between 3.6 and 6.8 kilograms, while cats stay between 5.4 and 9.1 kilograms or more. They have medium to long fur, thick and very smooth, and the entire body of the Ragdoll cat ends in a long and very thick tail.
It has a large head, with two very expressive blue eyes that can be of different shades. Depending on its intensity, eye color is a very influential and appreciated factor when this breed participates in beauty contests.
We can find the Ragdoll cat in different colors and shades, more specifically 6:
- Red, chocolate, fire or cream are the most common, although blue and a very characteristic lilac tone also stand out.
All shades give way to the following four patterns:
- Pointed - stands out for the dark tone at the end of the extremities such as the nose, ears, tail and paws.
- Mitted - very similar to the pointed pattern, although this one has a white band on the belly, as well as on the paws and chin.
- bicolor - in this case the cat has feet, belly and some white spots. It is also known as the Van pattern and is the least common of all.
- Lynx - quite identical to the bicolor cat with the difference of the tabby brands (the common stripe).
Character
Its name, Ragdoll, literally means rag doll, because this race is so sweet that when picked up, the animal relaxes completely. It is an excellent domestic animal, as it is generally considered a sociable and very tolerant cat. It doesn't usually meow, instead it emits low, delicate sounds.
It's quiet, discreet and intelligent, perfect qualities for those looking for a cat they want to spend time and caress. Due to their excessively relaxed behavior, the myth emerged that Ragdolls are pain resistant cats.
Health
Their average life expectancy is around 10 years. It is a relatively healthy breed of cat, although due to the medium to long coat size, digestive problems such as trichobezoars (fur balls on stomach).
At most common diseases that affect Ragdolls are:
- Urinary problems (which can be from the kidney or ureter)
- polycystic kidney disease
- hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Inbreeding is the most serious problem for this breed of cat, as nearly half of all Ragdoll genes (approximately 45%) come from its sole founder, Raggedy Ann Daddy Warbucks.
