As much as it is a unique moment to see how after pregnancy the cat takes such good care of her puppies, we must be aware that several problems can occur if this litter has not been desired by the owners.

If we do not have a house or a place to stay with the puppies in the litter, we must avoid at all costs that they reproduce, as this way we are avoiding the abandonment of animals, which is our responsibility.

So that this doesn't happen, next in this PeritoAnimal article we will show you the different contraceptive methods for cats.

Contraceptive methods for female cats

The female has a seasonal polyestric sexual cycle, this means that it has several estrus per year, coinciding with the most favorable seasons for reproduction, and it also ovulates when mating occurs, so fertilization is practically safe.

Let's see below what methods we have to prevent pregnancy in the cat:

  • Surgical Sterilization: Usually an ovariohysterectomy is performed, that is, the removal of the uterus and ovaries, thus preventing the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. It is an irreversible method, but if performed early, it reduces the risk of breast cancer. Of course, sterilized cats need specific care.
  • chemical sterilization: Chemical sterilization is reversible and is carried out through drugs that act identically to natural reproductive hormones, thus inhibiting the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. There are also oral contraceptive pills. These methods are rarely used and very often not recommended by veterinarians. In addition to being ineffective in preventing pregnancy, they can have serious side effects such as pyometra (infection of the uterus), which can be fatal.

Contraceptive methods for male cats

THE male cat sterilization it is done only with surgical means, basically we have two options:

  • Vasectomy: This is the section of the vas deferens, the pregnancy of the cat is prevented but the production of testosterone remains intact and the cat can continue without problems with its sex life, so this method does not prevent the cat's sexual behavior.
  • Castration: It's a surgery that takes just 10 minutes, simpler and cheaper than a cat's. It is the removal of the testicles and this intervention prevents wounds arising from fights with other cats and the endless walks that occur during heat, likewise, it also reduces the smell of urine. Like vasectomy, it is an irreversible method, and the neutered cat needs special control over its feeding.

Consult your veterinarian

Moves, there are several contraceptive methods for cats but not all of them have to be suitable for your pet, for this reason we recommend that you first consult your veterinarian, as he will be able to tell you which method is most suitable for your cat and what advantages and problems it may have.
