Lykoi cat origin

The lykoi cat began to be seen in the year 2010, in two unrelated litters, with little time apart and one born in Virginia and the other in Tennessee. Therefore, the origin of this feline breed is in the USA. The appearance of this breed was due to a natural mutation of the short-haired domestic cat. Although over the last 20 years we have seen some kittens with some different traits, these did not seem to be another breed other than the common short-haired one until the first completely different ones appeared and so the breeding began to become another breed. .

Although the mother is a common black cat, the kittens were born with this strange fur and some parts without fur and, therefore, it was believed that they could have a genetic relationship with the sphynx or sphinx cats. Some veterinary and genetic studies were carried out in universities in the United States, as the owners were worried if they suffered from a health problem and, only then, was it ruled out that it could be a disease and the relationship with the sphynx was also disproved. Therefore, has no genetic relationship with hairless cats nor others like the devon rex.

On the other hand, the name given to these new felines is interesting, since they were based on their appearance and chose the word "Lykoi" which means "wolf" in Greek. In fact, although they are not related to wolves anywhere, their fur and eyes are reminiscent of these animals.

Currently there are only a few a few dozen wolf cats across the planet. To succeed in establishing a consolidated breed, breeders rely on the help of the University of Tennessee to prevent the onset of diseases and genetic problems.

Wolf Cat Physical Characteristics

Physically, as you can see from the images you will find at the end of the article, the lykoi cat is a breed with a stylized body, a very peculiar fur and yellow eyes that, together, make him look like a wolf.

They are normal-sized domestic cats, as they weigh between 3.5 to 7 kg, with males being larger than females. The head shape is a little triangular, its eyes are big and yellow, a color that intensifies when they grow up, and their nose is always black.

The fur is short and of rwan color, that is, they have a black or gray base color and they have white hairs and streaks, giving an appearance of a mixed and disorganized cloak. In addition, the hair type is smooth although it has a hard and rough appearance.

A curious fact is that when they are born they have very little fur or none on its muzzle, around its eyes, on its belly, on its ears and sometimes also on its paws. The most common is that as they grow, their fur increases and ends up covering these parts, although it gets lighter in other parts, but there are adult specimens that continued with the muzzle and belly with very few hairs.

lykoi character

Although its appearance may look a little ugly, and even convey some respect, the wolf cat has a normal character just like any other domestic feline. People who lived with them describe these cats as very affectionate, sweet, friendly, playful, cheerful, very intelligent, a little messy and quite active. In addition, they have a marked hunting instinct and are a little suspicious of those who don't know them yet, although they take a short time to get close and let themselves be known. Indeed, have even compared them to dogs with regard to your personality.

These cats are like that whenever and when they are used to coexisting with people and more pets from an early age, something that has been done so far because there are so few specimens.

Lykoi Cat Care

The care of your hair requires a normal brushing, as it will be enough for your hair to be short. two weekly brushes and daily during the moulting season. As cats clean themselves, in principle, it is not necessary to bathe them and we avoid damaging the natural protective layer of their skin. You only have to clean it when the animal gets very dirty, and in this case, it is advisable to use dry-cleaning shampoos or wet wipes. If you use any shampoo to wash it with water it should be special for cats and never for humans or other animals.

As for the feeding this breed of cats you have to have quality, otherwise, we start to see health problems due to lack of nutrients. It is important to adapt your diet to your age, physical activity and your health status. In addition to the commercial pet food, you can also give some moist homemade food, something healthy that you will love.

Also, like any other domestic feline, we have to make sure its ears, eyes, nails and mouth are clean and undamaged. You may need to clean your eyes, teeth and ears sometime and also cut your nails, especially if you break one.

Lykoi cat health
