Labradoodle: origin
The first specimen recognized as Labradoodle was registered in 1995. However, it wasn't until 1988 that Australian breeder Wally Conron introduced the world to this hybrid breed in his association called "Victoria Dog Guide", as it is a guide dog for the blind. Thus, the objective of this crossing was to obtain a hypoallergenic dog, but one that was also affectionate, loyal and with great gifts for learning. Since then, this mixture of Labrador Retriever and Poodle began to be known and admired worldwide.
Currently, a standard that unifies the race is not found. One of the main reasons is the lack of consensus regarding the crossings to be carried out. Many breeders say that breeding should only be done between Labradors and Poodles, while others say that there may be breeding between Labradoodles. This made it start to appear differentiations, being the result of crossing between Labradoodles called Australian Labradoodle or multigenerational.
Over the years, many breeders have tried to develop the breed inappropriately, without taking into account the genetics of the parents, hereditary diseases and family ties. This caused the Labradoodle to have a major crisis, as many dogs had congenital illnesses or nervous problems due to irresponsible breeding. However, other breeders, such as Mellodie Woodlye, took into account all these criteria and decided to develop the breed in a more respectful way, giving another name to distance themselves from the bad practices of breeders other than Labradoodle. The name given to the dogs was Australian Cobberdog or Australian Cobberdog. It was gradually consolidated and, currently, the Australian Cobberdog is an officially recognized breed by the Australian MDBA Association.
Are Labradoodle and Australian Cobberdog the same dog?
Although many people consider they are the same hybrid dog, the truth is, they are not. The Labradoodle is the cross between the Labrador and the Poodle which, after a few years of development, gave way to the Australian Cobberdog. Thus, the Labradoodle is a crossbred dog, while the Cobberdog is a recognized breed, although not by all cynological organizations.
Labradoodle: features
The Labradoodle is a breed resulting from the mixture between the Poodle and the Labrador, which allows us to explain many of its characteristics. Regarding its size, there may be some variations, being of three types:
- toy labradoodle: measures between 35 and 50 centimeters;
- medium labradoodle: its size is between 45 and 51 centimeters;
