The Syrian hamster or أبو جراب was first found in Western Asia, specifically in Syria. Currently, its natural state is considered threatened, as there are fewer and fewer colonies living in the wild. They are very common as companion animals.

It is known for its big size compared to other hamster species such as the Chinese hamster or the roborovski hamster (species prohibited in Brazil). They reach 17 centimeters, although males do not usually reach 13 or 15 centimeters. They can weigh between 90 and 150 grams.
your fur is golden and can be short or long, also known as angora hamster in the second case. The color is golden, a little darker on the back and lighter on the belly. Currently, some breeders have managed several coat tones through genetic selection, reaching black, reddish, white, gray and chocolate brown specimens.
A curiosity are their cheeks that work as bags, which carry food from the cheeks to the shoulders, storing the food. The largest amount accumulated in a golden hamster is 25 kilograms, an incredible amount for its size.
Behavior
Unlike other types of hamsters, the golden hamster is more shy and reserved, preferring tranquility to excessive play. This also applies to your relationship with other animals, as you may be aggressive or uncomfortable with other rodents, of your own or of another species.
Still, it is not a particularly unfriendly hamster to people, as it rarely bites. Thanks to its size, it can be handled without any problems and without the risk of escaping. It is important that, before physically interacting with it, the animal is get used to the tutor. Before putting your hand inside the cage and holding the animal unannounced, talk to it and offer your favorite food so that the start is positive and pleasant for both of you.

Feeding this type of hamster is very easy:
You will find, in pet stores, suitable food that contains what will be the basis of your diet, that is, the seeds and cereals. In addition, it should offer vegetables and fruit twice a week. We recommend pears, apples, broccoli and green peppers.
It is also important that you receive a certain amount of protein which can be obtained through the poultry feed or unsalted cheese. Water should not be lacking in your bed, it should always be clean and fresh.
Habitat
look for one cage with measures of approximately 60 x 40 x 50. If you get a bigger one, the happier your hamster will be in its new home. It must have good ventilation, an impermeable floor and secure doors and bars. They love to climb and, therefore, it is preferable to choose a cage with several floors or with stairs, something that exercises your pet's muscles.
The space must have feeders and a drinking fountain (rabbit, for example), wheels or tunnels and, finally, a doghouse or nest to rest. Also, you can add shavings to the ground to make you feel more comfortable.
Illnesses
You should regularly clean and disinfect the cage, as well as the elements it contains, to prevent illness. The most common ones that can affect your Syrian hamster are: pneumonia or cold caused by air currents (can be solved by moving the cage to a more suitable environment) and fleas and lice, which can be eradicated with the help of an antiparasitic spray found in pet stores.
At sunstroke can happen occasionally, try to lower your temperature as soon as possible trying not to wet it. If you don't see a quick improvement, take the animal to the veterinarian. At fractures and wounds they are common and usually heal on their own with a little help (betadine for wounds, or a small splint for a week) although you should also see your veterinarian if the problem is serious.
