Origin of Fox Paulistinha

The history of this breed is little known and controversial. Some authors say that Fox Paulistinha is descended from smooth-haired Fox Terriers taken from Europe to Brazil and crossed with local dogs from Brazilian farms (this is the official version of the breed standard). Other authors say that the real ancestor of this dog is the Jack Russell Terrier. And there are also those who think that both the Fox Terrier and the Jack Russell Terrier have been crossed with local dogs in Brazil to give rise to this breed.

Regardless, the Brazilian Terrier is a very popular dog in Brazil that is used as a companion dog, smaller hunting dog and guard dog. Although it is very popular in its homeland, it is little known outside Brazil and is often confused with other terrier breeds.

Physical characteristics of Fox Paulistinha

In male Brazilian Terriers, the height at the withers it goes from 35 to 40 centimeters. In females, it ranges from 33 to 38 centimeters. According to the FCI standard, the maximum weight, regardless if it is a male or a female, is 10 pounds.

The Fox Paulistinha body is proportional and has a square structure. That is, it is equal in both height and width. Despite this, its lines are curved and well defined, unlike the Fox Terrier whose body follows straight lines.

Seen from above, the head of the Brazilian Terrier is triangular, with a wide base and the ears well apart from each other. The head narrows considerably from the eyes to the tip of the nose which is moderately large, dark and has large nasal passages. The muzzle is strong and well-formed and has thin, tight lips. The eyes are round, large and prominent, they should be as dark as possible, but not necessarily black. Blue puppies have bluish gray eyes, while brown puppies have brown, green or blue eyes. The Brazilian Terrier's ears are triangular and end in a point. They are laterally set and semi-upright, with the tip falling to the external angle of the eye.

The tail is set on low and the end does not reach lower than the hock. The dog can carry it high, but not bent over on its back. Unfortunately, tail amputation is common, and while the breed standard accepts dogs with full tails, it also accepts mutilated dogs.

O fur these dogs is short, thin and smooth, but not smooth. It's so dense and tight you can't see the skin through it. The breed standard makes reference to this characteristic, indicating that Fox Paulistinha's fur is "like that of rats".

The predominant color is white, with black, blue or brown markings. In addition, there are some color marks that are always present in puppies of this breed:

  • Fire color over the eyes, on both sides of the muzzle, inside the ears and at the edge of the ears.
  • Black, brown or blue marks on forehead and ears.

Character of Fox Paulistinha

The Brazilian Terrier is a dog cheerful, lively, curious, intelligent and very independent. This terrier does not escape any noise or movement, and is always alert to everything. In addition to being an alert dog, he has a very good temperament and spends a lot of time playing, even when he is no longer a puppy.

Despite their good character towards their own, these puppies are usually reserved with strangers and can even get to be aggressive dogs. Therefore, it is very important that dogs are properly socialized with people from an early age.

They also tend to be aggressive with other dogs and pets, so it is important to socialize them since they are puppies. It is not recommended to have a Fox Paulistinha with small pets, because its hunting instinct is very strong and it usually chases and kills small animals. However, he can get along well with dogs he was raised with since he was little, as long as he has been properly socialized, both the Brazilian Terrier and other dogs.

Fox Paulistinha care

The fur of these puppies is short and easy to care for. Regular brushing once or twice a week and bathing only when necessary is usually sufficient.

On the other hand, the exercise that Fox Paulistinha needs is very high and can be a difficulty for sedentary and calm people. In addition to the daily tours, the Brazilian Terrier needs intense games and fun training to keep yourself busy both physically and mentally.

The Brazilian Terrier is a very independent animal and doesn't need as much company as other dogs. However, it is also not a dog that should spend long periods alone, because when it is bored it tries to create some occupation on its own, usually destroying furniture and decorations.

Although it is small in size, this puppy is not very suitable for living in an apartment unless one has enough time to provide it. long walks and lots of exercise. Ideally, you should live indoors, but have a garden where you can play and burn calories when you're alone.

Education of Fox Paulistinha

When it comes to dog training, the Brazilian Terrier is best if you understand the principles of learning or a disaster if you use traditional training methods. this dog learn very easily both good and bad behavior, and any attempt to subdue it by force is futile. In contrast, clicker training or other styles based on positive reinforcement achieve excellent results.

Being such an active terrier, the Fox Paulistinha can show behavior problems depending on where it lives. The most characteristic are: excessive barking, digging the garden, destroying things and aggression towards other pets. When he gets bored he is usually a destroyer dog.

However, these problems are not an impediment for this puppy to be an excellent pet, as long as its basic requirements are met. If it gives you exercise (strenuous walks and games), your hyperactive character can channel itself into acceptable activities. Not an ideal pet for young children, since it can bite in reaction to involuntary abuse it receives.

Fox Paulistinha Health

This is a very healthy breed and does not have a tendency to particular diseases. But this is not a license to neglect the dog's care and health. Like any other dog, the Brazilian Terrier must receive the respective vaccines according to his vaccination schedule and the veterinary care he needs. You should go to the vet every 6 months just to confirm that you do not have any health problems and that everything is fine.
