Since 1990 in southern China the dog meat Yulin festival has been held, where, as the name implies, dog meat is consumed. There are many activists who fight every year for the end of this "tradition", however the Chinese government (which observes the popularity and media coverage of such event) does not consider not to do so.

In this article by PeritoAnimal we show the main events and the history of dog meat consumption since, in Latin America and Europe, ancestors also consumed meat from domestic animals, both by hunger and habit. In addition, we will explain some irregularities that happen at this festival and also the concept that many Asians have about the consumption of dog meat. Keep reading this article about Yulin Festival: Dog Meat in China.

dog meat consumption

We now find dogs in virtually any home in the world. For this same reason, many people find the fact of eating dog meat something evil and monstrous because they do not understand how a human being can feed on such a noble animal.

However, it is also a reality that many people have no problem ingesting taboo food for other societies such as the cows (a sacred animal in India), the pig (banned in Islam and Judaism) and the horse (very disapproved in Nordic European countries). Rabbits, guinea pigs or whales are other examples of taboo foods in other societies.

Assessing which animals should be part of the human diet and which shouldn't is not a controversial or controversial topic, it's just a matter of analyzing habits, culture and society, after all, they shape the population's view and direct them to one or the other side of a line of acceptance and conduct.

Countries where dog meat is eaten

Knowing that the ancient Aztecs fed on dog meat may seem far away and primitive, a reprehensible behavior but understandable for the time. However, would it be equally understandable if you knew that this practice was experienced in the 1920s in France and in Switzerland in 1996? And also in some countries to alleviate hunger? Would that be any less cruel?

Why Chinese Eat Dog Meat

O Yulin festival started to be celebrated in 1990 and its aim was to celebrate the summer solstice from the 21st of July. A total of 10,000 dogs are sacrificed and tasted by Asian residents and tourists. It is considered to promote good luck and health for those who consume it.

However, this is not the beginning of dog meat consumption in China. Previously, during times of wars that caused a lot of hunger among citizens, the government decreed that dogs should be considered a food and not a pet. For that same reason, races like the Shar Pei were on the brink of extinction.

Today's Chinese society is divided, as the consumption of dog meat has its supporters and detractors. Both sides fight for their beliefs and opinions. The Chinese government, in turn, demonstrates impartiality, stating that it does not promote the event, it also claims to act with force in the face of theft and poisoning of pets.

Yulin Festival: why is it so controversial

Eating dog meat is a controversial, taboo, or unpleasant topic according to each person's opinion. However, during the Yulin festival some investigations concluded that:

  • Many dogs are mistreated before death;
  • Many dogs suffer hunger and thirst while waiting to die;
  • There is no animal health control;
  • Some dogs are pets stolen from citizens;
  • There is speculation about the black market in animal trafficking.

Each year the festival brings together Chinese and foreign activists, Buddhists and animal rights advocates count those who practice dog killing for consumption. Large amounts of money are earmarked for rescuing dogs and even serious riots occur. Despite this, it seems that no one can stop this disgusting event.

Yulin Festival: what can you do

The practices that take place at the Yulin festival horrify people all over the world who do not hesitate to get involved to end the next festival. Public figures like Gisele Bundchen have already called on the Chinese government to end the Yulin festival. Ending the festival is impossible if the current Chinese government does not intervene, however, small actions can help change this dramatic reality, they are:

  • Boycott Chinese fur products;
  • Joining protests that are organized during the festival, whether in your own country or in China itself;
  • Promote the Kukur Tihar Dog Rights Festival, a Hindu festival from Nepal;
  • Join the fight for animal rights;
  • Join the vegetarian and vegan movement;
  • We know that the consumption of dog meat in Brazil is non-existent and most people do not agree with this practice, that's why there are thousands of Brazilians who sign for the end of the Yulin dog meat festival and also, using #pareyulin.

Unfortunately, it's very difficult to save them and put an end to the Yulin festival, but if we do our part in spreading this information, we can generate some impact and even discussions that can speed up the festival's end.
