Summary of Targaryen History

Before we talk about dragons, let's talk a little about the Game of Thrones universe:

Daenerys is a member of the Targaryan family whose ancestors, many years ago, conquered Westeros with the dragon firepower. They were the first to unite the seven kingdoms, which were always at war with each other. The Targaryen family ruled the 7 kingdoms for centuries, until to the birth of the Mad King, obsessed with the fire that burned all those who contradicted him. He was assassinated by Jaime Lannister during a rebellion organized by Robert Baratheon and has since been known as "the Kingslayer".

Daenerys, from the beginning, was forced to live in exile in western lands, until her brother married her to Chief Dothraki, the mighty Khal Drogo. To celebrate this union, a wealthy merchant offered the new queen three dragon eggs. After many adventures in Khalasar, Daenerys lays eggs on a fire and enters as well, as she is immune to fire. Thats how the three dragons were born.

DROGON

  • Personality and appearance: he is the largest of the dragons, the strongest and most independent of Daenerys's three dragons. His name, Drogon, honors the memory of Daenerys' late husband, Khal Drogo. Its scales are completely black but the crest is red. It is the most aggressive of the three dragons.
  • Moments in which it appears in the series: he is Daenerys's favorite dragon and it's what appears most often in the series. In season two, she finds out from Drogon that the word "Dracarys" causes him to spit fire. In season four, Drognos kill a child which causes dragons to be locked up in Mereen's bodegas. In the fifth season, Dragon save Daenerys of the battle at the Daznack Trench. She is also present when Daenerys convinces the Dothraki army to join her. In season seven, Daenerys rides Dragon to reach Kings Landing, where the Lennisters live.

VISION

  • Personality and appearance: Viserion is named after Daenerys' brother Viserys Targaryen. It has beige scales and some parts of its body, such as the crest, are golden. Still, it is called a "white dragon". One theory suggests that his name brings bad luck to the Targaryens, but arguably the most affectionate and tranquil dragon of the three.
  • Moments in which it appears in the series: in season two, Viserion appears with the brothers in the cage that transports Daenerys to Qarth. In season six, during Daenerys' disappearance, we can see Viserion chained and starving and that's when Thyrion Lannister decides to release him. In season seven, together with his brothers, he helps John Snow save his life from white walkers. But, unfortunately, the king of the night drives an ice spear into his heart and dies in that instant. Later, resurrected by the King of Night, is converted into part of the army of White walkers.

RHAEGAL

  • personality and appearance: Rhaegal is named after another deceased brother of Daenerys, Rhaegal Targaryen. His scales are green and bronze. It is probably the quietest of the three dragons and is smaller than Dragon.
  • Moments in which it appears in the series: In season two, Rhaegal appears with his brothers in the small cage that transports Daenerys to Qarth. In season six, during Daenerys' disappearance, Viserion and Rhaegal are freed by Trhyrion Lannister. In season seven, he reappears when they help John Snow save his life in front of the white walkers. In another scene, we can still observe a very special moment between him and the famous bastard.
