In this article by PeritoAnimal, we explain how to help animal NGOs so you can do your part. Below, we will detail how it is possible to act on behalf of the protectors of pets and also the foundations, shelters and reserves of rescued wild animals - and which cannot be adopted - but need help to be returned to their habitat or to receive the necessary care when they cannot be released. Good reading.

Choose an Animal Protection Association

First of all, once you have decided to help, you must know the difference between a kennel and an animal shelter. Kennels generally receive public subsidies to take care of the collection of dogs and cats from a particular municipality and/or state. And whether due to disease or even overcrowding and lack of infrastructure to meet the growing number of abandoned animals, the number of sacrifices in kennels and other centers maintained by the government is enormous. Animal shelters, on the other hand, are organizations that usually have no ties with the government and that adopt a zero slaughter policy, except in the most serious cases.

Although the animalist movement presses for animal sacrifices to be stopped, they still occur daily throughout Brazil. To give you an idea, according to a G1 report from the Federal District published in 2015, 63% of dogs and cats received by the DF Zoonoses Control Center (CCZ) between 2010 and 2015 were sacrificed by the institution. Another 26% were adopted and only 11% of them were rescued by their tutors.[1]

At the end of 2019, the senators approved the House Bill 17/2017 that prohibits the sacrifice of dogs, cats and birds by zoonoses control agencies and public kennels. However, the text has not yet become law as it depends on a new assessment by federal deputies. According to the project, euthanasia will only be allowed in cases of ailments, serious diseases or incurable infectious and contagious diseases in animals that endanger human and other animal health.[2]

That's why there are some Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that work precisely to relieve the overcrowding in kennels, thus avoiding possible animal slaughters. Thus, in the following text we will focus on explaining how to help Animal Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that aim to protect and save them.

1. Volunteer at animal centers

When it comes to how to help animal NGOs, many people think that the only option is to make some kind of financial donation. And while money is vital to getting on with the job, there are other ways to help that don't involve contributing money if you're not in a position to do so. The best way to do this is to contact animal protection NGOs directly and ask what they need.

Many of them are looking for volunteers to walk the dogs, brush them or ask whoever can direct them to take the animals to the veterinarian. But there are many more tasks that, while not directly caring for the animals, are equally essential for the proper functioning of an animal shelter.

You can work, for example, in repairs to the premises, print or make posters, participate in specific events to publicize the work of the NGO, take care of social networks, etc. Value what you know how to do well or simply what you are capable of doing and offer your services. Remember to get in touch before appearing at the site. If you show up unannounced, they probably won't be able to see you.

2. Transform your home into a temporary home for animals

If what you really like is being in direct contact with animals, another option is to make your home a temporary home for animals until he finds a permanent home. Welcoming an animal, sometimes in poor physical or psychological condition, recovering it and giving it to a home where it will continue to be cared for is a very rewarding experience, but also very difficult. In fact, it is not uncommon for the adoptive father or mother to end up adopting the pet. On the other hand, there are people who take advantage of the temporary experience to have a good perception before adopting an animal permanently.

If you are interested in this option, discuss the conditions with the animal NGO and ask all your questions. There are cases where the NGO can be responsible for the pet's expenses and others that don't, in which you become responsible for ensuring your well-being by offering not only affection, like food. Of course, it's the shelter that administers the adoption. But if you're still unsure whether or not to become a temporary animal home, in the following sections we explain how you can help animal shelters in other ways.

3. Become a godfather or godmother

Sponsoring an animal is an increasingly popular option and widespread by animal NGOs. Each protector has her own rules on this matter, which should be consulted, but in general it is a question of choosing one of the collected animals and paying a monthly or annual amount to help cover your expenses.

Usually, in return, you receive specific information, photographs, videos and even the possibility to visit the pet in question. If you are interested in helping stray animals, this can be a good alternative, as it allows you to establish a special relationship with an animal, but without making a commitment to take it home.

4. Donate materials or money

If you've ever wondered how to help animal welfare institutions, you've probably already considered becoming a member of a protective association. It's a very interesting way to contribute to your maintenance with the amount and frequency you choose. Remember that contributions to NGOs are tax deductible, so the cost will be even lower.

It's normal for you to become something of a member or partner of the organization, but animal welfare associations also accept occasional donations, especially when they have to deal with an emergency. However, you should know that for the financial organization of an NGO, it is much better to have fixed partners because that way they will know how much and when they will have a certain available funds.

In this sense, more and more protectors, reserves and shelters are implementing in their donation system the so-called "teaming", which consists of making Low monthly micro donations. In Europe, for example, in countries like Spain, Germany and France, it is common for partners to make monthly donations of 1 euro. Although it seems a very small amount, if we add all the monthly micro-donations, it is possible to offer, with this, a great help to the animals that live in the shelters. So it's a simple and easy option if you want to do something to help but don't have enough resources or time. If you can, you can contribute monthly to different animal NGOs.

Another way to help some of these NGOs is to buy products they have for sale, such as t-shirts, calendars, second-hand items, etc. Also, donations don't just have to be economical. These animal protective associations have very numerous and diverse needs. They may need, for example, blankets, collars, food, dewormers, etc. Contact an animal advocate and ask about how you can help.

5. Adopt an animal, don't buy

Have no doubts. If you can, adopt a pet, don't buy it. Of all the ways we explain how to help animal NGOs, including animal associations or shelters, adopting one of these animals is the best option and perhaps the most difficult.

According to data from Instituto Pet Brasil, more than 4 million animals live on the streets, in shelters or under the tutelage of needy families in Brazil. And the Brazilian population of animals is the third largest in the world, with about 140 million animals, only behind China and the United States.[3]

So, if you can really commit to a pet, offering it quality of life and lots of affection, adopt it. If you're still unsure, turn your home into a temporary pet home. And if you still have doubts, no problem, just share with your acquaintances the benefits of adopting and not buying pets and you will certainly be sharing love.
