Origin of the Hotot Rabbit
The Hotot rabbit is a rabbit of completely French origin. This rabbit did not appear spontaneously, but due to the extensive breeding work of breeder Eugenie Bernhard, with the first litter born in 1902. The name of the breed corresponds to the region from which it comes, Hotot-en-Auge. This breed shares genetics with others such as the butterfly rabbit, the Flanders Giant and the Vienna white rabbit.
The new breed soon became popular. It was exported to other European countries until it reached countries like the United States of America in 1920. In fact, in America it did not gain much popularity and practically disappeared, and in Europe it suffered the damage caused by the Second World War. However, the breed rose from the ashes, returning to the stage in the 1960s and 1970s, and a little later in the United States. Currently, it is recognized by the main cynological organizations, but it is classified as threatened due to the high risk of disappearance to which the Hotot breed is subject.
Hotot Bunny Characteristics
Hotot white is a small rabbit. Females tend to weigh around 3.6 to 4.5 kg, while males, slightly larger, vary between 4.1 and 5 kg in body weight. Its life expectancy is very long, since it is between 12 and 14 years old, although several cases of Hotot rabbits over 16 years old have been registered.
The most relevant feature of White Hotot, besides its small size, is its coat, completely white with peculiar black bands around your eyes. These very eye-catching strips have a width that must measure between 0.16 and 0.32 centimeters to be within the officially established standard. These black bands make it look like the bunny has shaped eyes, or that he wears elegant black glasses, a feature that highlights his kinship with the English spot or butterfly rabbit.
The snow-white coat of the Hotot rabbit is of medium length and high density, and is always smooth. Its body is compact, muscular though small, thick and with powerful limbs.
Hotot White Rabbit Colors
The only color accepted in the official Hotot white rabbit standard is the pure white, interrupted only by pure black in the lines that encircle his large eyes.
Hotot Rabbit Personality
The little Hotot rabbits are really smiling and grateful rabbits. They have a kind personality, being one of the most recommended rabbits to have as a pet. In addition to calm and affectionate, due to their size, they are also ideal to create in apartments of any size, even the smallest ones.
In addition, they stand out for their intelligence, ability and predisposition to learning. This is so much the case that experts in the world of rabbit breeding point out that this is one of the most obedient and easiest breeds of rabbits to train. You may not be able to get him to perform championship tricks, but it is true that white Hotot dwarf rabbits learn very quickly the basic commands and the hygiene education and living rules of the house in which they live.
Hotot White Rabbit Care
It is necessary to be very attentive to their diet, as it is a very greedy breed, which tends to develop problems of overweight and even obesity relatively easily. But this can be avoided by providing them with a Balanced diet and tailored to your specific nutritional needs. It should always be kept in mind that the diet of the Hotot white rabbit, like that of any other rabbit, should be based on the consumption of hay supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables.
Another of the cares of the Hotot white that you should pay attention to is the space dedicated to your rest. As a small breed, the cage doesn't need to be as spacious as that of other rabbits. Obviously, the minimum dimensions must be 61x61. It is important to put hay, water and a burrow in the cage so that the hotot can rest. Also, like all rabbits, White Hotot needs to exercise and explore, so it is not appropriate to keep him confined in the cage 24 hours a day. Ideally, he should have his own room to leave the cage open, and be able to explore the rest of the house in the presence of humans to avoid accidents.

Hotot rabbit health
This breed of rabbit is not particularly delicate in terms of its health status, and as a result, there are few diseases inherent to the breed. Specifically, the most common problem is the malocclusion, a condition that affects the oral health and therefore the general health of the animal. To solve this, it is necessary to be aware of the rate of growth of the rabbit's teeth, making scrapes at the veterinarian, if necessary, to avoid a more serious problem. At home, this can be avoided by providing White Hotot with elements or toys that it can chew on, which wears down the teeth in a much more natural and progressive way.
Another oral disease that affects Hotot is the abscess appearance, which should be treated by veterinarians and may be noticed by other symptoms such as lumps, decreased or stopped intake, or apathy.
In addition to being able to get sick for the reasons mentioned, there are numerous pathogens that affect rabbits, and Hotot is no exception, so it is recommended to keep them properly vaccinated. Veterinarians strongly recommend vaccinating rabbits against two lethal diseases, which are myxomatosis and viral hemorrhagic fever.
