1. Rhinitis and sinusitis
Rhinitis is a nasal infection that can spread to the sinuses, in which case it is called sinusitis. The clinical signs that these two conditions cause are sneezing, thick nasal discharge with bad smell and nausea due to the post-nasal drip that occurs. That is, the secretion that passes from the nose to the mouth is what makes the dog constantly swallow.
There are several causes that can trigger rhinitis and sinusitis, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi or, especially in older specimens, tumors or infections in the teeth. Therefore, a condition like the one described requires veterinary assistance, as it is necessary prescribe a treatment.
2. Foreign bodies
By the name of foreign bodies, we refer to objects as fragments of bones, chips, hooks, balls, toys, spikes, ropes, etc. When they are lodged in the mouth, throat or esophagus, we can notice the dog swallowing a lot and licking its lips. He also appears to suffocate, hypersalivation, does not close his mouth, rubs it with his paws or against objects, is very restless or has difficulty swallowing.
It is important to go to the vet, as the longer a foreign body remains lodged in the body, the greater the risk of complications and infections. Also, in some cases, the dog can suffocate. You should only attempt to extract a foreign body on your own if you are able to view it fully and have good access. Otherwise, there is a risk of worsening the situation. In any case, never pull sharp objects to avoid tears and injuries.
3. Pharyngitis
it is about the sore throat, being common that it affects both the pharynx and the tonsils. It often manifests itself in association with oral or respiratory infections. In these cases, we will notice that the dog is constantly swallowing saliva, has a cough and fever, loses his appetite, and the throat becomes red and oozing.
This whole picture is a reason for veterinary consultation, since it is the professional who must determine the cause of the inflammation and, based on it, guide the most appropriate treatment. That's why it's so important to pay attention if we have a dog swallowing a lot.
4. Esophagitis
esophagitis refers to esophageal inflammation, which can be due to several causes. We will note that the dog is constantly swallowing, feels pain, hypersalivation and even regurgitates. When this condition becomes chronic, the dog loses its appetite and, consequently, ends up losing weight. In any case, it is a problem that the veterinarian must deal with in order to establish the cause and further treatment.
5. Vomiting
As we pointed out at the beginning of the article, we can notice that our dog is swallowing a lot and restless before vomiting. Are the nausea or vomiting followed by visible contractions in the abdominal region and finally a relaxation in the lower esophagus. This is what allows the contents of the stomach to be expelled through the mouth in the form of vomit, although not all episodes of nausea end and so, and can stop with just the urge to vomit.
Dogs can vomit easily, so it's not unusual for them to do so for a variety of reasons, not a cause for concern. For example, when they eat garbage, grass, a lot of food, they get stressed, dizzy or very nervous.
However, it is clear that there are also several diseases that manifest with vomiting among their clinical signs, such as the dreaded parvovirus or some chronic diseases such as kidney failure. The torsion-dilation of the stomach also causes nausea without vomiting, in addition to great agitation and abdominal distension.
Therefore, it is advisable to observe the vomiting dog if it has or has already had other symptoms, and decide whether veterinary intervention is necessary. This aspect is especially important in the case of puppies, old dogs or debilitated, or those already diagnosed with some pathology.
6. Brachycephalic syndrome
Brachycephalic breeds are those that are characterized by having a broad skull and a short muzzle. An example are the bulldogs and pugs. The problem is that this particular anatomy is related to a certain degree of airway obstruction, which is why we often hear these dogs snoring or snorting, especially when it's hotter or when exercising.
We speak of brachycephalic syndrome when several deformities occur at the same time, such as the narrowing of the nostrils, stretching of the soft palate or the so-called eversion of the pharyngeal ventricles. In these cases, we can see that we are facing a dog swallowing a lot at the moment when the elongated palate partially obstructs the airways. In addition to retching, it is common to hear snorting, snoring or squeaking. The veterinarian can solve the problem with surgical intervention.
7. Kennel cough

Undoubtedly, the most typical clinical sign of this pathology is dry cough, but as it is not uncommon for it to be accompanied by retching, it is possible to see that the dog is swallowing a lot and, therefore, is chewing or swallowing saliva non-stop.
Kennel cough is usually mild, but there are cases that are complicated by pneumonia, which also causes fever, anorexia, runny nose, sneezing or breathing difficulties. Puppies can become more seriously ill. That's why it's important to always go to the vet.
8. Chronic Bronchitis
In chronic bronchitis, the dog will present persistent cough for months. The cause is not clear, but it is known that a bronchial inflammation. The cough will appear in fits, for example, when the animal is very nervous or exercises. When coughing we can also notice that the dog is constantly swallowing saliva, because the cough can cause nausea and expectoration, not vomiting.
