The origins of the Beagle or English Beagle go back to Jenofonte who, in his Treatise on the Hunt, speaks of a dog that could well be the first Beagle. Passing all stages of hunting from primitive men to medieval men, reaching the nobles and kings of the 18th century, where a more select choice was made, the "pocket beagles", which are now extinct but were greatly appreciated by such distinguished personalities as Queen Elizabeth I.
In 1840, they were exported to the U.S, especially for hunting. The creation of Beagles as domestic puppies did not take place until 1870. The world wars were a severe blow to the continuation of the race, but nothing that the Beagles that had spent so long fighting couldn't recover. The Beagles are today a breed highly regarded by the people, not only for hunting where they have behaved as faithful companions since then, as excellent members of the family.

Beagles brown and white colors and other physical characteristics
It is a breed of great beauty and elegance. Beagles almost always walk and move with the tail raised, forming almost an inverted "c", which gives them a proud look. It is a well-proportioned dog, square in shape, muscular in bearing, well-pronounced chest, long head (most noticeable in females) and black back. At ears are big and drooping down, giving the Beagle dog a touch of tenderness. As for its weight and height, the Beagle reaches between 33 and 41 centimeters in height to the withers and a weight that varies between 8 and 16 kilograms.
The colors within the breed can be divided into tricolors or bicolors, always with white, brown and black tones:
- Beagle tricolor - Classic tri: This classic combination always maintains the white base of the cloak, but the black that covers the dog's back predominates.
- Beagle tricolor - Dark tri: White base, very brown spots smooth mixed with black spots.
- Beagle tricolor - Faded tri: White base with some soft black spots, mixed with brown spots strong.
- Tricolor Beagle - Pied: It can be said that this is the split mixture, since the mantle is white overcoat, with some white and brown spots that do not stand out particularly.
- Bicolor Beagle: In this case, Beagles usually combine white and Brown. However, shades can vary from very light brown, red, orange, deep brown and even black.

Many people choose the Beagle for its physical appearance, as they look sweet in puppies and remain the same when they reach adulthood. However, when we make a decision as important as adopting a dog, we must know its behavior, disposition, defects and virtues before knowing if this is the right decision.
Beagles have a own personality, and not all personalities are compatible with us. Get to know this breed better and you'll decide whether to imagine your life with a Beagle as a companion.
- Beagles are very active dogs. Chalet life is more comfortable for him and you, as he can run whenever he wants and spend his energy that way. This is not to say that they are incompatible with apartment life, but if you don't have outside space, you should walk your dog at least three times a day (two of these walks should be long: one of an hour and the other of half an hour, way to make your Beagle completely happy).
- To understand them, don't forget that they are hunting dogs, genetically prepared to search for their prey, bark to warn and bring them to you (something he loves!). For these reasons, you should understand that the Beagle is an active, impulsive dog that won't flinch at the thought of seeking out and finding prey (and bringing a gift to the tutor). In addition, they are dogs that require a good education from puppies because they tend to become authoritarian through a tutor who does not impose his rules at home.
Beagle care in an apartment
Generally, it is a very healthy breed that can accompany the tutor for 15 long years of your life, when you are cared for correctly and with a lot of love.
It has short fur, so the care of the coat is easy. However, that doesn't mean you should let him take care of himself. Must be brushed two to three times a week and take a bath once a month, always taking into account how much or how little he goes out into the garden and how dirty he gets.
What you should watch carefully are your ears. Large and sagging, they are a place where dirt can accumulate, thus creating blockages. So, whether you take him to a canine beauty center or you do it yourself, you should pay attention to this.
O sport is fundamental, and the Beagle needs long doses of activity for physical and mental health reasons. Otherwise, you will end up with an obese and destructive dog as a result of nervousness. Walking with him at least three times a day, making sure he gets exercise, and taking walks in the mountains on the weekend are qualities a Beagle looks for in its tutor.
Behavior
For the Beagle, children are excellent playmates.. So you should know that your behavior with the little ones is great, as you have fun and spend a lot of energy playing. Families love Beagle puppies because the little ones have so much fun with them, playing nonstop. Parents must, however, put rules in place since neither of them (neither the child nor the dog) must exceed the limits of play.
As for pets, it is very difficult to predict how the Beagle will behave towards a cat, rabbit or bird at home. It is true that they are hunting dogs, but if they are used to living with other species since they are puppies, they can force good relationships. If the Beagle is an adult, it is best to make a greater adaptation process, following some guidelines for coexistence so that they are accepted.
Training
The Beagle is an obedient and intelligent dog that performs several functions as a hunter or sniffer:
- Hunting: Beagles were selected to hunt hares and rabbits. They are excellent hunting dogs due to their incredible tracking ability. Later, they joined the fox hunt (19th century). Their ability to cooperate in a pack and their predisposition also made them participate in pheasant hunting.
- sniffer dog: After discovering its qualities, the Beagle puppy started working as a sniffer dog in several cases. It participates in detecting prohibited agricultural imports as it is a very intelligent dog and accepts the rewards as a good education system. Inspection and detection are tasks that Beagle performs with great pleasure and dedication to please its tutor.
