Shorthaired Collie: origin

The Collie de Pelo Curto has its origins in the highlands of the Scotland, along with Collie from Long Hair. In those mountains, this breed of dog fulfilled the functions of sheepdogs. Over time, they also became highly prized pets, but they never caught on to the popularity of their long-coated "cousins."

Currently, the Longhair Collie and the Shorthair Collie are recognized as a unique breed of dog by the American Kennel Club, but are treated as different dog breeds by the International Cynological Federation (FCI).

Shorthaired Collie: features

Collie Short Hair's body is athletic, slightly longer than tall and with a deep chest. The legs of this type of dog are strong and muscular, but not thick. The head of this dog is thin and shaped like a truncated wedge. The muzzle, although thin, is not pointed and the animal's nose is black.

Smooth Collie's eyes are almond shaped, medium in size and dark brown. However, in puppies that have a bluish-black coloration, one or both eyes may be completely or partially blue. The ears are moderately long and the animal folds them when it is at rest. When he is attentive, the ears are moved semi-erect and forward. This Collie's tail is long. At rest, this breed of dog carries it as if it were hanging, but with the tip angled slightly upwards. During the action, the animal can lift its tail higher, but it never touches its back.

Regarding the animal's coat, it is this that distinguishes the Collie of Short Hair from its better-known relative, as mentioned above. In Shorthaired Collie, the coat is short and flat, with the outer layer having a stiffer texture, while the inner layer is softer and denser. At colors accepted internationally are:

  • Black and white, blue and white or gray and white;
  • Wolf gray (white fur base and very dark tip);
  • Brown and white or shades of light gold to dark mahogany and white;
  • Common tricolor (black, chocolate and white), lilac tricolor (lilac, brown and white) or gray wolf tricolor (white, gray and shades of gold);
  • Blue-Merle (with a blue "marbled" effect) or red-merle (with a red "marbled" effect).

The height from the withers to the ground of the males of this breed varies between the 56 cm and 61 cm and of the females, between 51 cm and 56 cm. The ideal weight for males varies between 20.5 to 29.5 kg, while that of females varies between 18 to 25 kg.

Shorthaired Collie: personality

Friendly, kind and sensitive, these dogs share the excellent temperament of the Long Haired Collie. They are also very intelligent and active animals that need a lot of exercise and companionship. Also, to the delight of those who adopt them, these dogs are generally not aggressive.

Even though the Smooth Collie has a natural tendency to be friendly with people, dogs and other animals, it needs to be socialized like any other dog. So it's good to socialize your shorthaired collie puppy so that he doesn't get too shy and reserved with strange people and situations. However, it is noteworthy that, due to the personality it has, this breed of dog will not have problems in terms of socialization, education and training.

Short Hair Collie: education

The Short Hair Collie responds to canine training as well as the Long Hair Collies and therefore adapts easily to different styles of education and training. However, because they are sensitive dogs, traditional training can cause conflicts and damage the relationship between dog and breeder. Thus, it is better to use positive training methods such as clicker training or training with rewards. A dog will always better internalize an order when it reinforces a job well done, and thereby stimulates the animal's desire to continue learning.

Due to their sociable nature, these dogs generally make excellent pets when they are given plenty of physical and mental exercise, as well as the companionship they sorely need.

Shorthaired Collie: care

Unlike the Longhaired Collies, the Shorthaired Collie doesn't need a lot of coat care. These animals shed their hair regularly, especially during the two annual moulting seasons, but brushing is usually sufficient. 1 or 2 times a week to keep the coat in good condition. It is also not advisable to bathe these puppies very often, but only when it is really necessary.

Smooth Collies are sheepdogs and as such they need a lot exercise and company. They require long walks every day and a time set aside for games and games. If possible, it is also recommended that they practice some canine sport or activities with dogs, such as herding (grazing), agility or canine freestyle.

This breed of dog can get used to living in apartments if given enough physical and mental exercise, but it lives better in houses with a garden. Anyway, the Collie with Short Hair is a type of dog that needs the company of the family, so the garden should be used for the animal to do physical activities and not to be isolated.

Shorthair Collie: health

Some of hereditary diseases which the Shorthair Collie is more prone to are:

  • Collie Eye Anomaly (AOC);
  • Gastric torsion;
  • Distikiasis;
  • Deafness.

As you can see, the Smooth Collie is a dog that can have impeccable health if all the necessary care is provided. So, you should take your dog to periodic veterinary appointments, to detect early pathologies in advance, carefully follow the vaccination schedule and keep your pet's deworming up to date. Also, whenever you notice a sudden change in your Collie's behavior, whether it's Short or Long Hair, don't hesitate to go to vet.
